ForbesNYT ‘Strands’ #85 tips, spangrams and answers for Monday, May 27

Memorial Day has come and gone. May is at the last minute. It will soon be June and—at least around the Cain household—birthday season. After a few days in April, birthdays kick off in earnest again in June. My daughter will be 17 years old first. Then both one of my uncles and my grandmother – Nana – will have birthdays. I will be 43 on the 20th. Then Elden Ring expansion, Shadow Of The Erdtree, his own birthday is 21. And my son will be 14 in july. Everyone gets old.

In any case, we’re not here for birthday announcements, my dearest Stranditos. We have today’s NYT Strands puzzle to solve. Let’s go!

How to play Strands

The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a classic word search game. It’s still in beta, which means it’ll only stick around if enough people play it every day. Keep playing, in other words. Our collective mission is to keep this game alive and get it into the app!

Every day you can play a new Strands game. The game presents you with a six by eight grid of letters. The goal is to find a group of words that have something in common and give you an idea of what the topic is. When you find a topic, the topic will remain highlighted in blue.

You will also need to find a special word called a spangram. This will tell you what the words have in common. A spangram joins two opposite sides of the board. While the topic words will not be a proper noun, a spangram can be a proper noun. When you find a spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.

Springs it’s still not in the New York Times game app, but you can play it right here.

All today’s answers

Another fairly simple Strands puzzle today. So easy, I really don’t think you need any more advice, although I will say that once you realize that it’s not about the types of birds, but rather the sounds that birds make, it’s pretty simple. I was listening to the birds chirping outside my window while I was dealing with this, so that was helpful. Also, while Spangram is a BIRDSONG, not all of these sounds qualify as a “song” in my opinion.

If you need further assistance, spoilers below!

Here is the full list of words:

  • Cluck
  • Trill
  • fluctuating
  • Twitter
  • Screech
  • tweet
  • Whistle

Today’s thread breakdown

I started by guessing THISTLE because I saw it before I saw the whistle. When that didn’t work, I quickly found the right word. This made the TWEET pretty obvious (though perhaps not to Elon Musk, who would have been looking for the X designation instead).

From there I got TRILL and CLUCK, then Spangram and WARBLE, CHIRP and SCREECH quickly revealed themselves. Easy Pea, Lemon.

How did you do on your Strands today? let me know Twitter and Facebook.
