After Neil Druckmann called out Sony for inaccuracies in a published interview, the company has now apologized to The Last Of Us co-creator.

While you might expect developer interviews published on official company platforms to be rigorously scrutinized to iron out any negative wrinkles, Sony has found itself in a difficult position by doing the exact opposite.

Last week, an interview with The Last Of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann was published on the Sony Group Portal, where he talked about the impact of AI on game development. He also teased Naughty Dog’s next game, claiming in the original version of the interview that it could “redefine the mainstream perception of gaming”.

After the interview was published, Druckmann emphasized on Twitter that he did not actually say those words at all. “Unfortunately, while editing my rambling answers in my recent conversation with Sony, some of my words, context, and intent got lost,” he wrote.

Now, days later, Sony has completely deleted the interview from its website and apologized to Druckmann after discovering “several significant errors.”

“In re-examining our recent interview with Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann, we found several significant errors and inaccuracies that do not represent his perspective and values (including topics such as animation, writing, technology, artificial intelligence, and future projects).” notice reads on the website.

“We apologize to Neil for misrepresenting his words and for any negative impact this interview may have had on him and his team.” In coordination with Naughty Dog and Sony Interactive Entertainment, we have removed the interview.”

What’s particularly bizarre is that Druckmann only initially pointed out the inaccuracies in his edited answer to a question about future projects, but this apology suggests that the entire article was riddled with problems across all threads.

Publishers are usually very careful to ensure that journalists transcribe interviews accurately, but since this appears to have been treated as a marketing exercise, primarily aimed at investors, Sony seems to have taken a very loose approach to editing Druckmann’s comments.

The controversy comes after Naughty Dog canceled online multiplayer spin-off The Last Of Us in December, despite Sony’s push for more games for live streaming, which may indicate a troubled relationship behind the scenes.

In his unedited response regarding Naughty Dog’s next yet-to-be-announced game, Druckmann teased that it’s “perhaps the most excited I’ve been for a project yet.”

He added: “I’m not just excited about this game that we’re making – and it’s something really fresh for us – but I’m also excited to see how the world will react to it.

“Because of The Last Of Us and the success of the show, people outside of gaming are looking at us to see what we’re going to release next. I’m very excited to see the reaction to this thing – and I’ve already said too much about it. I will stop there.’
