What will be in the state of PS5 today?

New Astro Bot Could Be Announced Today (Sony Interactive Entertainment)

The Thursday Letters page is desperate for a new Batman game as one reader is shocked at how much money Star Citizen has raised so far.

Get ready
So here we are. Announced at the last possible moment and at 11pm, but we finally have confirmation that the PlayStation will be unveiled this month. Except it’s not a showcase, just State of Play, and it’s only half an hour long. This is going to be such a badass burger that the internet will be insufferable for weeks.

If there’s any bigger first-party announcement than Astro Bot and Ghost Of Tsushima on PC, I’ll take yoga (I’m using that as an example of a very unlikely thing). All we get are mid-level third-party reveals, games we already knew about, and a terrible sense of disappointment.

I urge everyone to prepare for the worst, and if by some miracle something interesting is announced, it will be a nice surprise. Personally, I don’t even know why Sony bothers if they don’t do a proper job with it, but who can understand them lately.

Better than nothing?
So there will be a PlayStation event eventually, but is it State of Play and not a demo? That’s not a good sign, especially if it’s only 30 minutes. I don’t see anything major to say, especially since they haven’t confirmed any big first party games until next year.

I have to wonder why this is even happening. Casual gamers wouldn’t notice if it was cancelled, but now it will inevitably be overshadowed by the Xbox display case, which is probably a good thing. He’ll definitely have a lot of games and be longer than 30 minutes – he only spends that on Call Of Duty!

Sony keeps making these weird decisions that hurt it for no reason. Quietly admitting you don’t have any new games in a statement that only hardcore gamers will know about is one thing, but publicly proving you don’t have anything with a tepid demo seems like an easy-to-avoid home run.

Die Fledermaus returns
Nice to hear that the people in charge of Rocksteady seem to have left early and started their own studio. Although I thought Microsoft didn’t believe in exclusives? Or is it only when it suits them?

I know there’s been some uncertainty about exactly whose idea Suicide Squad was, but I think the fact that the first thing the studio is doing is a single-player game makes it pretty clear that even if Rocksteady made the first draft, they weren’t happy with the way it ended up going.

It’s a shame they won’t be able to make a Batman game, though even if they do, there are all these characters and gimmicks that you just can’t do, even with a similar concept. Maybe it’s just best to do something completely different, but still single player. We look forward to anything, however it may be.

Xenu’s favorite game
When Microsoft was buying Activision and spending a lot of money, for some bizarre reason I was thinking, what happened to Chris Robert’s and Cloud Imperium Games’ Star Citizen?

Lo and behold, a Eurogamer article appeared and crowed about how the game/tech demo/alpha (take your pick!) made $700 million, including $3 million in May alone!

All I can say is I’m impressed. With Sony revealing that Spider-Man 2 cost £300m, you’ll wonder what Cloud Imperium is up to. At this point, are there any GC readers who have invested in this and could shed some light on what they think the outcome will be?

It currently has to be the single most expensive game ever made in the country. But the cost is all on his backers and not the publisher. So, what happens when it all falls apart and the money runs out?
To be honest, it all sounds like Scientology to me…

GC: It’s an inexplicable amount of money for something that has brought in so little for so long.

Nothing but duty
I just saw that this year’s Call Of Duty will be Day 1 of Game Pass and Xbox is praying to help them out. I don’t see that working. A monthly subscription to Game Pass costs just under £9 a month. If you’re really just a Call Of Duty player, you’ll be playing it for 12 months until the next Call Of Duty comes out.

Over 12 months that’s around £120 a year. You can buy the game for £70, a saving of £50. I don’t see it helping Xbox or Phil Spencer other than the money from the sales themselves. I don’t really see an increase in Game Pass subscribers, maybe a few but not £69 billion more. But I’ll never know, I gave up on the game years ago.

Opening the door
Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of praise for Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. I played the original but barely remembered it and the remake looks way better than I ever expected. I love how you can tell the characters are made from little pieces of handmade paper and everything is so quirky and imaginative.

It’s really funny. I love Luigi and Goombella (I support the idea of her getting her own game, maybe some sort of collaboration with Toadette) and all the other characters. Everything feels so alive and surreal. It’s much more reminiscent of the original games, where things were very weird, but with a great American script.

Nintendo would be crazy not to make another Paper Mario game similar in style. I’ve never played Origami King, but as far as I know, it still wasn’t a roleplaying game, and it just seems so pointless. Create a new game that is a full-fledged role-playing game, with a funny scenario and a lot of other strange new characters – not just the ones that already exist.

I really hope it’s an early Switch 2 game, but I think The Thousand-Year Door only coming out now probably means it won’t. It means we have a lot to look forward to in the future once we get the first notification.

Remote multiplayer
Remote Play on PlayStation is missing an important feature, which is local multiplayer. I don’t want to lug around a PlayStation 5 and play multiplayer games. Sony would be wise to include remote multiplayer.

I’ve always enjoyed local multiplayer since the N64 and I’m not much of an online gamer anymore. Any other improvements to their remote play apps, such as increased resolution, are also welcome.

Batman forever
Hearing that the founders of Rocksteady are back with their own company is great and all, but they obviously won’t be working on Batman anymore. I know Suicide Squad was bad, but the first three Batman: Arkham games were so good and it’s a crime we don’t have anymore. Origins and Gotham Knights were okay but just not the same. They are fine copies of what came before, but they didn’t add anything new.

James Gunn’s new cinematic universe is starting soon, and the first Batman game (not the Matt Reeves series) seems pretty far off, and I’m not sure there’s much chance we’ll get anything before then. Neither are we saw still a Wonder Woman game and that was announced years ago.

Gunn said that the games will be in the same continuity as the movies and stuff, but it seems like that will probably just slow their development down even more. I doubt there is any real plan for anything else. Who would make the next game and what formats would it even be for?

I just want a good Batman game again, it’s been almost a decade and I’m sure it will be many years before the next one – and no guarantee it will be good.

What happened to the reader who was away playing Sekiro a few weeks ago? We have heard from them since, do we have to provide a welfare check?
ANON

GC: Heh, we don’t think so. Maybe they gave up on the game in disgust at its difficulty.

I’m glad Stellar Blade was successful because it’s a great game. But that only encourages them to do more kinky things. There are special websites for this sort of thing, make me a game to play in front of my girlfriend.
