Bungie reacts after Destiny 2 The Final Shape was “accidentally released live on PS5” early

Update as of May 31, 2024: Bungie released a statement after “part” of Destiny 2’s The Final Shape expansion was “accidentally published” on the PS5 streaming service.

The studio confirmed that spoilers were shared online and that “a small group of players” had access to the campaign, collections, echoes and “other reward information”.

As a result, the team is advising players who don’t want the experience to be spoiled to be very careful on social media ahead of next week’s release of The Final Shape, asking those who have seen the spoilers to “please be considerate of others. “.

“We thank all members of our community who have already helped us by reporting leaks and those who are actively working to prevent more experiences from being shared before the intended date,” the statement concluded.

“It’s always extremely difficult when our team’s hard work shows up early, but we’re still looking forward to everyone experiencing the full release together on June 4th.”

The original story is as follows.

30 May 2024: Eyes up, Guardian – The Final Shape DLC has leaked online after the expansion was temporarily available today.

As stated many times in the Destiny 2 subreddit community and beyond, “all” of The Final Shape DLC was “playable” – although some say that’s an exaggeration and the content was only accessible – until developer Bungie eventually “killed” the servers.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t before spoilers about the story, raids, trophies, loot and more – much, much more – flooded social media and online communities. It appears that the content was available after yesterday’s scheduled maintenance.

No spoilers have been included in this story.

“The entire DLC is playable right now. If you don’t want spoilers now, you have a chance to get out of the submarine, out of X, out of everything,” said a Destiny 2 player on the official subreddit, captioning his post: “CODE RED : DLC SPOILERS COMING EVERYWHERE LEAKED”.

“PC servers killed, Bungie/Sony going to attempt full damage control,” said the first update to their post, quickly followed by: “UPDATE 2: This leak trumps everything else. Raid gear, raid mechanics, HUGE STORY SPOILERS. LIKE. . .MASSIVE If you don’t like leaks/spoilers, tomorrow is going to be hell.

According to the poster, players who happened to find themselves with the new update were “somehow still online even though the servers were down lmao”.

“Full campaign available. Seasonal stuff too,” the poster explained.

Eventually the content was taken offline again. It’s been speculated, but not definitively confirmed, that players were able to access the new content through a “fucking Sony backend” similar to what some used to get an early look at the Elden Ring DLC.

At the time of writing, neither Bungie nor Sony have publicly acknowledged the leak.

Last week, the Guardians got their first look—well, heard, technically—of Commander Keith David Zavala in Destiny 2: The Final Shape.

We already knew that Bungie had no plans to remove Zavala from Destiny 2’s story since he was “central” to the upcoming The Final Shape expansion, but this is the first time we’ve heard Zavala voiced by David. Until now, Zavala’s voice work was pre-recorded by his original voice actor, Lance Reddick, who sadly passed away last year.
