The latest Samsung Leak shows the design of the Galaxy Z Fold 6

Updated June 5: article originally published June 3

The Galaxy Z Fold6 will be officially unveiled at Samsung’s next Galaxy Unpacked event in early July, but a new leak gives us our best look yet at the upcoming foldable flagship and Samsung’s plans to support its foldable devices.

Update: Wednesday, June 5.

Confirmation of the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s new design cues came from a surprising source: Samsung itself.

Although it has only been online for a short time, several marketing images of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 have been released on Samsung Kazhakstan’s website. The angular design with tighter corners of both the Fold and Flip is clear. What’s not visible is the Fold 6’s cover screen and how much wider the screen is.

These marketing shots clearly mirror those of the Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra. As Samsung moves its foldable phones towards the wider consumer market, by visibly moving closer to “standard” smartphones, the Galaxy normalizes the concept of foldable phones for many. This will also be helped by the shared feature… the Galaxy AI brand is also introduced.

Update: Tuesday, June 4. While larger displays will be welcomed by everyone, Samsung seems to be testing another comforting change: the cost of repairing the foldable screen is set to drop.

Samsung has announced that it is introducing different folding screen components on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5. Consumers will now have the option to replace a damaged part instead of paying for a complete replacement. With fewer parts to replace, the cost of repairing a damaged screen should drop, with the company citing savings of up to 36 percent.

In addition to changing the pricing structure, Samsung also expanded the number of repair centers in South Korea from 13 to 32.

While this change is currently limited to South Korea, the perceived fragility of the foldable screen, along with the high cost of repair, is a global concern. With Samsung addressing this with the current Z Fold and Z Flip models, the community will be hoping this trial becomes a global option as the Zfold 6 and Z Flip 6 launch in July.

Images of a non-working Z Fold 6 dummy have been posted online. These mockups are typically distributed to peripheral manufacturers who need consumer-ready hardware to test the fit and functionality of accessories such as cases and mounts. At launch, you can expect to see these units as Point of Sale devices where retailers don’t want to put a functional unit.

The unit shows the new design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. The design has remained consistent over the past three generations, and while it is updated, the changes are more evolutionary than revolutionary. Two key visual changes center around the displays.

The first is visible when the device is open and closed, but the biggest difference will be when using the open Z Fold 6. The corners have been flattened for a more angular look of the smartphone. It’s not a sharp 90 degree angle; there’s still some curve, but the radius is significantly smaller than the Z Fold 5’s corners.

While this should increase the diagonal of the display, it means that more information can be pushed into the corners – something that will be noticeable when using video or taking photos.

The second noticeable change is the cover screen, which becomes the traditional candy-shaped screen and is used when the Z Fold 6 is closed. Due to the foldable nature of these phones, the cover screens were taller and thinner than a normal smartphone display. Samsung increased the width of the cover display to fit the traditional look.

It still lacks the wider look of the Galaxy S24 family, but it’s an improvement over previous models and should help the Z Fold 6’s usability when closed.

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 6 alongside the Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Ring on July 10 during the latest Galaxy Unpacked event.
