Live updates as emergency services block Smithdown Road Asda

There is a large emergency services presence on Smithdown Road.

Police, fire and emergency services were called near the Asda supermarket in Wavertree. Images taken by the ECHO also show a cordon in place. According to traffic management system Inrix, Smithdown Road southbound is closed due to a “police incident” from Wellington Avenue to Gainsborough Road.




He is said to be handling the operation well. ECHO reporter Wesley Holmes is currently at the scene and we’ll be bringing you the latest updates here.

A man throws objects at police officers from an apartment

A man was arrested after police officers were allegedly attacked.

Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire and Ambulance Service and North West Ambulance Service were all called to Smithdown Road, near Asda, in Wavertree at around 9am on Thursday June 6. This was followed by a report that a man had been seen damaging cars and shouting at people.

The man then walked into the property on Thorney Croft Road. When the emergency services arrived on the property, he threw several things at the officers from the apartment.

Firefighters closed the scene

ECHO reporter Wesley Holmes said the scene had now calmed down.

Most of the emergency services have already left the scene.

Statement from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service

A spokesman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said:

Firefighters were at the scene assisting Merseyside Police. Crews remained on standby but no action was taken.

Crews have now left the scene.

Man arrested on suspicion of assaulting police officers

Officers detained the man on suspicion of assaulting officers before he was taken to hospital for medical assessment.

He will then be taken to the police station for questioning.

Man seen ‘damaging cars and shouting at people’

Merseyside Police confirmed they received reports of a man damaging cars and shouting at people in Smithdown Road at around 9am.

The man then walked into the property on Thorney Croft Road. When emergency services arrived at the property, he threw several items at officers from the address.

Our reporter Wesley Holmes was told riot police were on the scene.

Criminalists were also spotted. Emergency services appear to be focusing their efforts on the apartment.

Bus diversions

Due to the incident on Smithdown Road between Bagot Street and Wellington Road, all outbound buses from the city center are currently being diverted via Lodge Lane and Ullet Road.

There is currently no timetable for disruption, Merseytravel said.
