Product recall is an important means of protecting consumers from dangerous goods.

As a general rule, if the recall involves a branded product, the primary responsibility for the recall would usually lie with the manufacturer.

But it is often left to supermarkets to inform customers when products could put them at risk.

If you are concerned about the safety of a product you own, always check the manufacturer’s website for a safety warning.

When it comes to appliances, rather than just food, it’s usually up to you, the customer, to register the appliance with the manufacturer, as if it wasn’t, there’s no way to contact you to tell you of the defect.

If you find that an item you own has been recalled or has a safety warning, make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

They should usually provide you with additional information and a contact number on their security notice.

In some cases, the manufacturer may ask you to return the item for a refund or arrange for the defective product to be picked up.

You should not be charged for any recall work – such as repairing, replacing or picking up the recalled item.
