The award-winning Cornwall restaurant has been named one of the UK’s top 20 fish and chip shops by the Observer magazine. Harbor Lights in Falmouth consistently delivers excellent food and is gaining recognition as one of the best in the UK.
According to the Harbor Lights website, the restaurant has been winning awards for its exceptional food since 2016. Dubbing fish and chips as “British DNA”, the restaurant is committed to serving the highest quality and responsibly sourced produce.
This charming family business favors all things Cornish. Their award-winning chips are made from the finest local potatoes, while the fish is caught from Newlyn. The best thing about this business is its eco-friendly ethos, which encourages customers to try different species as it takes pressure off the most popular fish and provides protection for our oceans.

But the menu offers plenty of choice for customers, with small plates ranging from homemade onion rings (£4.55) and calamari (£7.70) to garlic mushrooms (£5.45) and chicken goujons (£7.70). For mains, go for a beef, chicken or halloumi burger (£15.45) or a classic jumbo jumbo sausage (£9.25-£10.25).
If you don’t eat meat or fish, you can choose from vegetarian and vegan options such as vegan fish, vegetarian sausages and nuggets. Not only did the Observer name this humble Cornish chippie as the best, but animal ethics organization PETA noted the top spot for “delicious tofu ‘fish’ and home-smoked jackfruit ‘fish’ pies.”
PETA’s director of vegan corporate projects, Dawn Carr, said of the restaurant: “Harbour Lights’ amazing vegan fish is a real catch that celebrates the sea without harming the animals that live there.”
Don’t just indulge in their signature chips as you can choose from many sides such as baked beans, mushy peas and gravy. Harbor Lights puts its community first by also offering a children’s menu, offering a main course, drink and dessert for under £10.
The Observer noted “community focus on this Cornish chippie.” The reviewer also stated: “Local hake is celebrated; MSC-approved choices are labelled. If you’re eating in the mains, bring unlimited chips; if you’re eating out, watch out for seagulls.” The Observer’s full list of the best fish and chip shops is below.
