Audio-Technica introduces its most advanced vinyl cassette ever

If you had said 20 years ago that vinyl would come back and compete with raising Lazarus, I wouldn’t have believed you. Today, vinyl is extremely popular despite the high cost of media and the need to invest in a record player. The revival of this medium has breathed new life into the design and manufacture of record players.

One company that has never given up on vinyl is Audio-Technica. The premium Japanese brand has been making vinyl cassettes for 60 years and their latest premium model is the AT-ART1000X. Audio-Technica says it’s the company’s most advanced to date and the culmination of 60 years of cartridge design experience.

Developed and manufactured in Japan, the AT-ART1000X has been designed to extract the maximum analog signal from vinyl. Audio-Technica has focused on getting a more sophisticated direct power system that delivers better efficiency and better bass reproduction.

Like its predecessor, the AT-ART1000X’s direct power system places a dual moving coil directly above the stylus tip. The result, says Audio-Technica, renders even the finest details in the music and ensures that the sound is not compromised by the length and material of the console.

The newly developed coils for the AT-ART1000X are rectangular rather than round in shape. They are located with a larger part of the surface inside the magnetic field. The result is improved output voltage and an extended low-frequency range that reproduces stronger and more accurate bass.

Each non-magnetic core coil is made from 20μm (0.79 mil) PCOCC (Pure Copper by Ohno Continuous Casting) wire, hand-wound precisely eight times to create an innovative rectangular shape.

The coils are contained in an ultra-thin 25μm (0.98mil) special film and placed in a small gap of 0.5mm (0.020″) of powerful magnetic circuitry. This design allows each coil to generate an output voltage of 0.22mV and a coil impedance of 3.5Ω, although has a non-magnetic core.

The AT-ART1000X has a high-performance touch tip and solid boron beam of the previous generation. The robust titanium base offers consistent playback and works with the solid cartridge housing and aluminum housing to dissipate any resonance that might negatively affect sound quality.

Finally, Audio-Technica says the new cartridge is designed to last longer with a special coating that protects the magnetic circuit from corrosion and provides stable performance throughout the life of the cartridge.

Price and availability: The Audio-Technica AT-ART1000X will be available from today and is priced at $5,000 / £4,700 / €5,500.
