Honor’s clamshell phone is finally here as the Chinese company looks to enter direct competition with Samsung.
As CNBC noted, the Honor Magic V Flip is a China-only device for now, but that may change as others in its portfolio have arrived abroad. More importantly, Honor says in its press release that the Magic V Flip’s standout feature is its 4-inch cover display. The company also placed cutouts for the camera lens on the left side of the screen to make it easy to operate with one hand when closed.
With a resolution of 1200 x 1092, the Magic V Flip’s LTPO display can achieve a maximum, smooth refresh rate of 120 Hz. Honor says it has implemented its eye protection technology into the display to help with consumer eye health.
Users will have access to around 40 apps on the cover display, including some for games, videos, music, chats and navigation. Such content will appear to the right of the camera cutouts, leaving the left side exclusive to time and other notifications.
The 2520 x 1080 resolution internally has a 6.8-inch display equipped with HDR display enhancement technology. Honor adds that the phone’s unfolded display features 3840Hz ultra-high frequency PWM dimming for extra eye health protection. The Magic V Flip weighs around 193 grams and measures 7.15 mm when unfolded and 14.89 mm when closed.
This makes it slightly thinner than the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Motorola Razr Plus (2023).
The cameras, modeled after the ripples of raindrops, provide a 50MP Sony IMX906 primary lens with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) and a 12MP ultra-wide field. Honor says its ultra-wide-angle lens supports automatic AI software recommendations and super macro switching to capture both near and far subjects.
The front selfie camera has a resolution of 50 MP with automatic focus (AF).
Considering its form factor, the Magic V Flip allows users to bend it 90 degrees to take selfies. The post states that users can take advantage of time-lapse photography in 4K and preview it on two screens.
Unboxing the device highlights Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC. The company says the Qualcomm chip is boosted by the C1 Plus’s own RF-enhanced. Honor’s variant increases the performance and “communication capabilities” of the Magic V Flip. Elsewhere, the phone offers a 4,800 mAh capacity with support for 66W charging.
The Honor Magic V Flip has started accepting pre-orders in China today (June 13) before it hits the market on June 21. The device is available in two RAM/storage variants: 12/256GB and 12/512GB priced at 4,999 Yuan (~$689) and 5,999 Yuan (~$827) respectively. Consumers in China will find the device in Camellia White, Champagne Pink and Iris Black.
The “Premium” edition of the Magic V Flip also changes the color selection for the jadeite aesthetic. Honor says this version offers 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage for 6,999 yuan (~$965).
