The ‘world’s worst ticket’ has been revealed as a budget airline launched an ‘ultra-basic’ no-frills option… so would you pay for it?

BUDGET airline has unveiled an “ultra-basic” no-frills option that gives the passenger the option of just a seat and nothing else.

A Canadian low-cost airline has withdrawn its offer, making it the “world’s worst ticket”.

The airline WestJet recently announced its new ticket option, aimed at affordable air travel.

Similar to RyanAir’s baggage policy, WestJet said only personal items that fit under the seat in front are allowed.

While checked baggage is allowed for an additional fee.

However, passengers who choose the cost-effective option will not be able to choose their seats.

Everyone flying will automatically be assigned seats in the back of the plane, including middle seats, and will not necessarily sit with others the passenger is traveling with.

However, as with checked baggage, passengers have the option to select their seats for an additional fee.

John Weatherill, executive vice president and group commercial director, said: “We are committed to making air travel affordable.

“UltraBasic is an innovative cost-effective solution that strengthens WestJet’s ability to offer guests low-cost flights to multiple destinations.”

Many budget airlines, such as Ryanair and Wizz Air, only allow one small bag under the seat in the ticket price and charge customers extra if they want more bags.

In a statement, the airline said: “We believe these changes will help us continue to provide competitive air travel options while focusing on operational excellence.”

The airline also told CBC news that the purpose of the ultra-basic ticket variant was to “speed up the boarding process and provide competitive pricing.”

This is not the first time low-cost airlines have made questionable decisions under the guise of affordable options.

In 2017, a Colombian airline announced its intention to rip out seats to make air travel more affordable.

VivaColombia wants to remove all seats from its planes and let economy class passengers stand.

At the time, VivaColombia founder and CEO William Shaw said: “Right now there are people investigating whether you can fly standing up – we’re very interested in anything that makes travel cheaper.”

The airline later ceased operations due to financial difficulties in 2023.

Budget airlines Ryanair are also no strangers to basic tickets.

Currently, the most basic airline option allows one small personal item to fit under the seat in front.

Customers are responsible for paying for any additional carry-on bags, checked bags and seat assignments.

Its strict baggage rules have led to a slew of TikTok videos from customers on how to “hack” the system.

These tricks include removing the stuffing from the neck pillow and replacing it with clothing that fills the normal pillow with special clothing, or wearing multiple layers of clothing in flight.

But the airline has vowed to crack down on Britons who avoid baggage fees.

What does the Westjet ultra basic ticket get you?

Canadian airline WestJet has introduced its “ultra basic” tickets.

A “no frills” option was recently introduced and could indicate the start of a wider trend.

And even with the benefits of flying removed, a ticket between Vancouver and Toronto will still cost CAN$288.28 (£165).

So what does it get you?

  • One seat randomly assigned in the rear of the aircraft
  • One small personal item (eg camera bag, sports ball or pet carrier)

Passengers who book the ultra basic fare will also be the last person to board their flight and will be charged more than usual for any baggage.
