Vengeance Steam Deck Setup Guide

Shin Megami Tensei V: Revenge is a massively expanded version 2021 Shin Megami Tensei Vcontaining multiple quests, monsters and a new story path with a completely new character. However, perhaps most importantly, Revenge is dropping the original game’s Nintendo Switch exclusivity for a cross-platform release. PC gamers can now enjoy this game via Steam Revenge is an officially verified Steam Deck. However, does it actually work well on Valve’s handheld?

After at least 15 hours of play Shin Megami Tensei V: Revenge portable, I can confirm that the game runs very well on Steam Deck. At the default resolution of 1280 X 800, I was able to enjoy reliable performance that usually stayed close to a solid 60 FPS. If you plan to enjoy this RPG on the go (or in bed), definitely grab the Steam version.

What should you do if you encounter performance issues on Steam Deck?

That said, I did encounter one caveat in particular: When I first started this game via play in the dock, I initially had trouble navigating through the intro. The frame rate would drop to an abysmal level, causing the sound to be out of sync with the picture. Since then I have not been able to reproduce this problemso it may be a bizarre anomaly.

In case you run into any performance issues, temporarily lowering the game resolution has worked for me. In my case, once I got past the intro and properly entered Da’at, I turned the resolution back and the game ran great from there. If you experience persistent issues, consider restarting your console or checking if the game or system needs an update.

What are the best settings for gaming Shin Megami Tensei V: Revenge via a docked game on Steam Deck?

Overall, Shin Megami Tensei V: Revenge it doesn’t have too many graphical switches to play with. You can choose to turn off Motion Blur, which I personally disable (if you leave Motion Blur on, the graphics will be blurred when the camera is rotated). You can also choose to turn it off Anti-aliasing or Ambient occlusionbut Personally, I would leave them. Disabling them does not result in any convincing performance gains.

Been said, If you have Steam Deck connected to a monitor or TV, you can increase the resolution of the game to enjoy excellent visuals.. To do this, press before selecting “Play” on the game’s main page gear icon on the right side of the screen (image above), then select Properties > General > Game Resolution. Here you can manually choose what resolution the game will run at, even if it’s beyond the default Steam Deck resolution. The in-game resolution must match what you select here, so be sure to check your graphics settings in the Options menu to make sure everything is fine.

Based on my testing experience, here’s how the game runs at the following resolutions:

1368×768: This is mostly just a pure visual upgrade. The game usually ran between 55 – 60 FPS and didn’t drop significantly below 50. It’s not a huge graphics boost, but it’s “free” if you’re on a TV.

1600×900: I found this to be a good and balanced option. The game usually kept the resolution above 50 FPS, only occasionally dropping below that. If you’re not too sensitive to framerate issues, it should look nice and smooth.

1920×1080: Believe it or not, Shin Megami Tensei V: Revenge generally runs fine at 1920×1080! You’ll spend more time in the 40 FPS range, with occasional dips below that. However, the game was still perfectly playable and never dropped below 30.

I personally preferred playing at 1600×900, but your mileage may vary. Some areas of the game may be more challenging than others, so you may need to adjust the resolution depending on where you are. Either way, Steam Deck’s performance is leaps and bounds better than the Nintendo Switch version, so keep that in mind when choosing which version of a game to play.
