Two sandwich makers that supply UK supermarkets have recalled products due to the risk of E.coli, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has said.
It’s a preventative measure a week after the UK Health Safety Agency announced the outbreak forced some people into the hospital.
Products from Boots, Asda, Tesco, Co-op, Aldi, Sainsbury’s and Amazon are included in the recall.
Asda and Tesco stressed that this was a precautionary measure and said customers could return the products for a refund.
The companies that supplied the products are Greencore and Samworth Brothers Manton Wood.
Other manufacturers are understood to be issuing their own recalls in the coming hours.
The FSA said it had narrowed down the source “to a small number of lettuce products that were used in sandwiches, wraps, soups and rolls”.
Symptoms include “severe and sometimes bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever”, said UKHSA’s Trish Mannes.
However, some cases can cause serous complications that can lead to kidney failure.
People are advised to follow NHS.uk guidance if they feel sick.
“Washing your hands with soap and warm water and using disinfectants to clean surfaces will help stop further spread of infection,” Ms Mannes said.
People who may be infected should also not prepare food for others and avoid work or school for up to 48 hours after symptoms have stopped.
The UKHSA said the number of cases had almost doubled in the past week, with a further 98 bringing the total to 211.
The numbers are expected to rise as testing continues for more Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) cases.
Based on 160 cases, 42% of people needed hospital treatment, the UKHSA added.
It said last week that the cases were linked to a “nationally distributed food” but gave no further details.
E.coli bacteria are normally harmless and live in the intestines of humans and animals. However, some strains, such as STEC, can make people very sick.
