The Switch has a vast library of games covering all manner of franchises, and while it has plenty of Final Fantasy titles these days, one game in this particular series is still missing, Square Enix’s massive (and wildly successful) role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV Online. . So will we ever see it on a Nintendo system?

Game director and producer Naoki Yoshida (also known as Yoshi-P) was recently asked by Easy Allies about the possibility of a Nintendo release and mentioned how he wants the game to be available on as many devices as possible long-term. This apparently includes Nintendo hardware, and at the rate it’s going, the new target could potentially be a “Switch successor.”

According to Yoshida, it is a long-term “dream or goal” for him to allow players to play this online Final Fantasy game on none device and release on a Nintendo platform in the future is something he would absolutely “love” to see. Here’s exactly what he had to say (via Nintendo Everything):

“My dream or goal for over a decade now is that players can play Final Fantasy XIV regardless of device and have access to servers to enter the same world. … we’ve been talking about bringing the game to the Xbox platform for years, so of course we’d love to have our title available on the Nintendo platform and we want to continue our efforts. But it’s taken a long time – we’ve literally been talking to Xbox for years, and now it’s finally coming. We will try our best and continue to work hard and continue our efforts. In the end, that would be great – something we’d love to explore and make happen one day.”

It looks like us again probably you won’t see Final Fantasy XIV Online during this current Nintendo generation. Even if it happened, based on certain other release, it may be locked to select regions or distribution methods such as cloud streaming. E.g Dragon Quest X online (Japan exclusive) and Phantasy Star Online 2 (cloud version on Switch).

Nintendo has also now mentioned how its Switch “successor” will be revealed this fiscal year, so this comment is likely already factoring in future hardware releases from Nintendo.

Final Fantasy XIV Online was last released on Xbox platforms where players could enjoy a free trial version of the game that offers quite a lot of content. You can learn more about this latest version of Final Fantasy Online on our sister site Pure Xbox.

If you’re not familiar with Final Fantasy XIV Online, as the name suggests, it’s an online version of the numbered series that lets you explore role-playing as a unique character, take on different classes and jobs, live out your story, and save the day alongside a player base of over 30 million adventurers .
