The game is still in beta, but it’s a lot of fun, and I’m still hoping it finds its way into the New York Times Games app.

Let’s solve today’s grid!

How to play Strands

The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a classic word search game. It’s still in beta, which means it’ll only stick around if enough people play it every day. Keep playing, in other words. Our collective mission is to keep this game alive and get it into the app!

Every day you can play a new Strands game. The game presents you with a six by eight grid of letters. The goal is to find a group of words that have something in common and give you an idea of what the topic is. When you find a topic, the topic will remain highlighted in blue.

You will also need to find a special word called a spangram. This will tell you what the words have in common. A spangram joins two opposite sides of the board. While the topic words will not be a proper noun, a spangram can be a proper noun. When you find a spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.

Springs it’s still not in the New York Times game app, but you can play it right here.

All today’s answers

Many of these are pretty obvious types of tea, so once you start looking for them, it should be pretty easy. Only one confused me. I’ll give you a special hint: Don’t think about tea, think about muskets.

If you need further assistance, spoilers below!

Here is the full list of words:

  • Matcha
  • Chai
  • Oolong
  • Chamomile
  • Jasmine
  • Gunpowder

Today’s thread breakdown

Like I said, it was pretty easy once I found the first tea – MATCHA – and very quickly after that I found CHAI. I noticed the word TEA and because it is too short (only 4 letter words or longer Springs) I figured it must be the first half of SPANGRAM and sure enough. From there, CHAMOMINE, OOLONG and JASMINE fell in short succession. It was only Gunpowder that really stumped me. I admit to some confusion when I finally figured it out. I had never heard of gunpowder tea before. You will learn something new every day.

It is apparently a Chinese green tea, the leaves of which are rolled into small round balls resembling grains of gunpowder, from which the tea gets its name. The rolling process helps preserve the freshness and flavor of the tea, making it more robust and longer lasting compared to other green teas.
