ForbesNYT ‘Strands’ #105 Tips, Spangram & Answers for Sunday June 16th

Father’s Day has come and gone. I hope everyone had a great time, whether you are a father or just have a father, or even if – maybe especially if – you don’t have one in your life, I think it might be on a day like Father’s Day. I hope you all had a good day. I love Father’s Day now because my teenage kids always want to do their own thing, but on Father’s Day (and my birthday later this week) they have no excuse not to watch movies with me. I miss when they were little and all they wanted to do was hang out with me. It’s funny how we can take this for granted when we are young parents and overwhelmed.

Ah, enough with the bittersweet. I saw Inside out 2 this weekend, and one of the funnest parts was a new emotion, Nostalgia, that popped up for a moment before being chased away by the other emotions. “Too soon!” they exclaimed. Well, now I’m immersed in nostalgia. Once it grips you, it will never let you go.

Okay, let’s untangle this Strands network, shall we?

How to play Strands

The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a classic word search game. It’s still in beta, which means it’ll only stick around if enough people play it every day. Keep playing, in other words. Our collective mission is to keep this game alive and get it into the app!

Every day you can play a new Strands game. The game presents you with a six by eight grid of letters. The goal is to find a group of words that have something in common and give you an idea of what the topic is. When you find a topic, the topic will remain highlighted in blue.

You will also need to find a special word called a spangram. This will tell you what the words have in common. A spangram joins two opposite sides of the board. While the topic words will not be a proper noun, a spangram can be a proper noun. When you find a spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.

Springs it’s still not in the New York Times game app, but you can play it right here.

Here is the full list of words:

  • MONOPOLY
  • LEAD
  • SORRY
  • BATTLESHIP
  • PROBLEMS
  • RISK

Today’s thread breakdown

I love board games and have played them all, although not many for a long time. Once I found the CLUE, I immediately found the SPANGRAM and everything else fell into place until I was left with RISK and PROBLEMS. I hadn’t seen the ‘R’ for RISK in a long time and it threw me off, but once I did it was pretty easy. Of those, I’d say CLUE and MONOPOLY are my favorites, although I’ve enjoyed many SORRY games. RISK has always been a game I thought I wanted more of, but I feel like it needs more depth in its war mechanics to really shine. BATTLESHIP is just dumb luck. TROUBLE is the game I played the least. I have enough problems in my life to deal with.
