TDK has successfully developed a material for semiconductor batteries with 100 times higher energy density

June 17, 2024

TDK Corporation (TSE:6762) has successfully developed the material for CeraCharge, a next-generation solid-state battery with an energy density of 1,000 Wh/L, which is approximately 100 times the energy density of TDK’s conventional solid-state battery.

TDK’s technology is focused on solutions that can be used in a variety of wearable devices such as wireless headphones, hearing aids and even smart watches to replace existing button batteries.

Using TDK’s patented material technology, TDK has succeeded in developing a material for a new solid-state battery with a significantly higher energy density than TDK’s conventional mass-produced solid-state batteries (type: CeraCharge) through the use of solid oxide batteries. anodes from electrolytes and lithium alloys. The use of a solid oxide-based electrolyte makes the batteries extremely safe. It is intended for use in wearable and other devices that come into direct contact with the human body.
The battery can be used as a replacement for primary button batteries in accordance with EU battery regulations that require them to be replaced with rechargeable batteries, which should help reduce the impact on the environment.

TDK will aim to develop battery cell design and packaging structure and move towards mass production, focusing on the development of its new product, solid state batteries. In addition, TDK aims to increase battery capacity through multi-layer lamination technology and expand the operating temperature range by using manufacturing engineering technology that TDK has accumulated in the field of electronic components.

Main application

  • Various wearable devices such as wireless headphones, hearing aids and smart watches
  • Environmental sensors
  • Replacement of button batteries

Main features and benefits

  • The use of a solid oxide-based electrolyte makes the battery extremely safe
  • The smaller size and higher capacity contribute to a smaller device size and longer operating time
