Microsoft plans to release the Windows 11 2024 Update (version 2024) in two waves. First, the company plans to ship the new version to new ARM-based devices in June, but only with some new features. After that, the feature update will be available in September (or October) for existing devices with the intended features, but even then your PC probably won’t get it on day one.
One thing is clear. You shouldn’t expect a feature update to arrive in June. In September (or October), Microsoft will begin a slow rollout as an optional update, and it will take some time on every compatible device. Since this is technically a new version, the upgrade will require a complete reinstall regardless of the installation method.
In this guide, I will explain how the software giant plans to push the new version of the operating system.
Which devices will get the Windows 11 2024 update first?
Microsoft is expected to start rolling out the 24H2 version in June 2024, but it won’t be a release for existing devices. Instead, the company will first ship the operating system in the upcoming Copilot+ PCs with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processor. However, this version will contain only the basic components that are required to bring new devices to market.
In September, that’s when the Windows 11 2024 update (in its final form) will be available for existing PCs with all the features, but only as an optional download for seekers.
Over time, the company will continue to use AI and ML to push the new update for PCs that are known to have a seamless upgrade. In other words, the feature update will first be available for computers with newer hardware, and then as the version proves to be more reliable, it will be rolled out to other hardware configurations.
It’s important to note that many factors can also affect when a new version will be ready for your computer. For example, if the service channel detects a problem with your hardware configuration or peripherals, incompatible drivers, applications or security programs, you will have the option to upgrade once the problem is resolved. Your geographic location may also determine when feature updates arrive on your computer.
Although Microsoft won’t force a feature update automatically, devices with an operating system version nearing the end of service will download the update automatically. (This usually happens a few months after the initial release.)
Can I force upgrade to Windows 11 2024 update?
The short answer is yes. When the company says that the 24H2 version is available in the Stable Channelyou will be able to force the update by performing an in-place upgrade using the official ISO file, Installation Assistant or Windows Update settings.
Windows Update
Since the update is not installed automatically, the first option to force the update is to use the “Windows Update” setting.
To force Windows 11 version 24H2 on your computer, open the Settings > Windows Updateturn on “Get the latest updates as they become available” tap the option “Checking for Updates” and tap on “Download and Install” option (if any).
Installation assistant
If the update is not available, you can try the Installation Wizard. This tool allows you to upgrade to the latest version when Windows Update is not working.
Once the 2024 update is available, click on “Download Now” button to download the tool from this Microsoft support site. Then just run the installer and click on “Accept and Install” knob.
ISO file
Alternatively, you can mount the official ISO file in File Explorer and run the setup.
You can download the Windows 11 2024 Update ISO file from Microsoft’s support site. Under “Download Windows 11 Disc Image (ISO)” click on “Download” knob.
Whichever way you choose to upgrade, I always recommend creating a temporary backup in case the new version causes problems and you need to revert to the previous version.
Important: Windows 11 2024 Update is expected to be partially available on June 18, 2024 for Copilot+ computersbut it will not contain all the intended features, incl Windows Recall, as it was postponed pending appeal. In September or October, the feature update will be more widely available for existing devices. As a result, some new features and changes may not be available to everyone on day one. Some features (especially AI features) may also require the availability of new hardware.
