Direct predictions
I’m glad we finally got a date for the Nintendo Direct, although I’m not sure why it only had to be the day before. I seem to remember that the E3 ones used to be announced many weeks in advance. I agree with the logic that there has to be something substantial in 40 minutes. Nintendo knows better than to bore people for so long with only minor games. After all, they invented this whole format.

Metroid Prime 4 seems like the most likely candidate by far, and I think a release this year followed by an enhanced version for Switch 2 makes perfect sense. How better to prove the power of a new console when the game looks significantly better on it? So I think it will definitely be listed today, for the Christmas release.

It reminds me of a rumor a few months ago that said Metroid Prime 4 would be released this year along with two Pokemon games. I can see that happening or maybe this rumor of a Zelda remaster or a new game from above? There’s no way Nintendo could go five years without a new Zelda game, and they always ask someone else for remasters, so it could easily be done by now.

Oh mother
I’m not expecting big announcements at the Nintendo Direct tomorrow based on the Switch being in its twilight era, but a localized version of Mother 3 or maybe a couple of Goemon games added to the Nintendo Switch Online subscription would be enough to get me very excited.

I don’t think it will happen, but you never know.

GC: Goemon isn’t impossible, but Mother 3 is leagues below Hollow Knight Silksong in terms of probability.

Outside of Ultimate
My bet on what they do with the next Super Smash Bros is that it will definitely be a port of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. They might add a few new characters and maybe a new single player mode, but I really don’t see what they can do beyond that, given that Ultimate is pretty much perfect for what it’s trying to do.

In this day and age where multiplayer games take forever, Super Smash Bros. it was really only meant to be a live service game, but I don’t know that Nintendo would do that. They would probably think that a new game would sell just as well if it was just an improved remaster. They may be right too, but with each passing year I wonder if that’s the way all sequels will go, even the Nintendo ones.

Just business
As a fan of the original Alone In The Dark I bought the recent reboot and while it had some issues I thought it was generally well done and a very authentic homage to the first game. So I was very saddened to hear that the developer has already been shut down, another victim of the horrible Embrace Group.

And then we find out how much EA pays their bosses to come up with the brilliant idea of firing hundreds of developers. I know it’s not just gaming, it’s just business, but hearing about it is really disgusting. It’s no wonder that most developers who see even a hint of success leave and start their own studio or become an indie producer.

I used to think making games for a living would be the best job, now it feels like a nightmare. My condolences to all those affected.

Passive violence
Not that I’m a fan of ratings and censorship, but I believe I can explain why Still Wakes The Deep only got a 16 rating despite using the c-world and being inspired by The Thing. I think swearing has little effect on the age rating and that violence is basically not penalized at all.

You said there isn’t that much blood, which makes me think the reason otherwise harmless games like Assassin’s Creed are 18 is because you’re participating in the violence, not just watching it. It seems pretty silly, considering how movies are movies, but I think it’s just a block from people in power who still don’t understand video games very much.

I have to admit I was surprised that multiple uses of the c-word didn’t get an auto-18 rating. I’m not even sure if GTA has used that word before. But yeah, I doubt they play/watch these things properly, especially since it’s more of an indie title.

Second round
Just a heads up for anyone planning on getting the Elden Ring DLC to check their save files even after defeating Mogh the first time.

I re-downloaded the game over the weekend to get into it and make sure I beat the necessary boss (yes, according to my trophies) but I didn’t realize that after completing the game I started New Game+ for the first time and as such it was immediately on beginning

Now I need to play significant parts of the game to get to the point where I can run the DLC and it almost certainly won’t be ready on release day. At least my character is stupidly overleveled in the early sections, so I’m progressing faster than the first time.

GC: That’s exactly the position we were in. The problem with New Game+ is that it disables all fast travel pages, plus you have to beat Radahn and Morgoth again if you go the Consecrated Snowfield route. It didn’t take as long as we initially feared, but it’s still a few hours of work. Also, don’t assume you’re too level for the DLC itself…

An unsolvable problem
I really don’t see the point in continuing Starfield with more DLC. Basically, the game isn’t fun, with boring combat and space battles, an uninteresting plot, and forgettable characters. That’s not a good basis for a game that Bethesda is talking about getting support for ten years or whatever.

I’d much rather see them put all their resources into The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5, but I think they’re too stubborn to admit that Starfield is just nowhere in the same league. I don’t see how they’re going to fix any of these problems, and I’m not sure they’re too proud to even admit there’s a problem.

Episodic gaming
I hadn’t heard rumors of Spider-Man 3 being split into two parts before, but it’s an interesting way to solve the problem of rising costs. My question is will each episode be as long as Spider-Man 2 or half as long? If it’s shorter, the game will basically be double the price of the previous game, so a person who wants to spend £150 on a new game will basically get their wish.

If every part is the same as a regular game, I’d say it’s a good way to save money and get games faster. Would it make sense to split the Elden Ring in two and sell it that way? Probably not, but something like Baldur’s Gate 3 could easily be split into three and sold for a third of the main game.

You’d basically get a paid demo of the full game, which seems like something a publisher would be interested in. It seems less wasteful for people who aren’t sure they want to pay more, and means they spend less money on a game they’ll never beat – because they can’t sell it because it’s digital.

It’ll probably be a less interesting part in the style of movie 1 and 2, and Sony won’t bother using it as a way to change the way they sell games, but I think it could work that way.

Is it worth buying Super Smash Bros. Ultimate if I only play it in singleplayer mode?
Mr. SiNn

GC: It’s not an easy question to answer, but we’d say yes… if you like most of the characters and are a big Nintendo fan in general.

RE: Inbox letter about PS5 Pro. If he manages to make Gran Turismo 7/PlayStation VR2 even a little better than it already is, I’d buy it. It’s easily my biggest time lapse in the last year.
