Highways England tweeted:
“The A1 southbound is now closed between J73 and J72 Swalwell for emergency repairs to an infrastructure fault.
“Repairs are already underway but the road is likely to remain closed through the peak evening period. Expect longer journey times.”

Blackouts and long delays on the A1
The A1 Southbound Western Bypass is closed with major delays due to emergency repairs from J73 A694 Derwenthaugh Road (Blaydon / Consett Turn Off) at J72 B6317 Hexham Road (Swallwell junction).
There is congestion on the A1 J77. The access road at this junction (J73/A496) is also closed due to emergency repairs on this section.
