What was the best game at Nintendo Direct 2024 in June?

The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom – A Very Welcome Surprise (Nintendo)

The letters page on Wednesday is very angry that the Nintendo Direct was so good, as one reader plans to spend the weekend with Shadow Of The Erdtree.

Unpredictably good
I know they always say you shouldn’t try to predict Nintendo, but who would have thought this week’s Nintendo Direct would be this good? When it opened with Mario & Luigi, I knew it was going to be good because no one revealed it and they could have ended it, but then they just keep announcing more stuff and only one remaster – and it wasn’t even one that people expected .

My favorites were Zelda and Metroid Prime 4. Zelda where you actually play as Zelda is long overdue and I love the sound of the new echo mechanic. It looks really smart and should allow for some great sandbox-style puzzles. I also like how Zelda doesn’t just do Link stuff but has her own tricks. It looks a lot more like a proper game than the recent Princess Peach.

Metroid Prime 4 also looked great. Not much to judge except the graphics which… were Switch 2 or not? I’ve seen arguments for both sides, which is probably exactly what Nintendo was counting on. Great show all around and I love that the Switch isn’t dying a slow death, it’s going out with a bang.

Uncomfortably good
Nintendo makes me slightly angry about the Direct. First, because I’ve prepared myself for the fact that there won’t be anything major on the horizon until the Switch’s successor is released, so I’d save a bit of money in the meantime. Now there are at least three games that I will probably end up buying.

Second, I was happy to spend my time filling my Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door craze, but they added Turok, Perfect Dark, and Metroid: Zero Mission to the online expansion. I haven’t played the first two in decades, and I’ve never played Zero Mission before, so they all probably mean the draw will remain unfilled for now.

Expanding the backlog
Thanks Nintendo for just emptying my piggy bank!

I was there thinking Sony has nothing and I don’t own an Xbox so I don’t have to worry and I have a nice little backlog of Switch games to keep me occupied until next year when they suddenly drop. Point and blow me away. Again.

Metroid! Zelda! Dragon Quest! Fantastic! Mario and Luigi! And much more…

I have no idea how I can afford it or have the time to play it all, but any way you look at it, Nintendo has shown once again that it has magic and doesn’t need to mention any. new console, even going so far as to tell us they won’t even talk about it beforehand. They thought it was overconfidence, but no, they had more than anyone and practically nothing leaked.

How on earth they will achieve that Direct with a new machine in 2025 is beyond me.

A woman leads
It’s nice to see that the two biggest announcements at the Nintendo Direct both involved female protagonists, and in a way that I don’t think any sane person would complain about. Samus looked ugly as usual and an actual Zelda game is long overdue.

I also really liked the Tri Rod trick for Zelda. It means he won’t just be Link, he’ll have a different look, but he’ll still be able to fight and guess in new and interesting ways. A really good Direct, with a lot more interest in the games than I expected. It may not have been better than the Xbox, but it absolutely killed Sony’s event and the boring Summer Game Fest.

Slow but steady
Well done FromSoftware, well done. You have outdone yourself. As I said before, I literally just started the Elden Ring, but I will continue to make progress no matter how long it takes and it will take me a long time. Always grind. Hopefully I’ll be skilled enough to beat Radahn and Mohg, then I’ll see what Shadow Of The Erdtree has to offer.

That’s why I won’t be buying it right away because I understand that the DLC will be more difficult and I’m not the biggest of players. Believe me. I make sure to hide behind the shield and dodge as much as I can. But it’s on my bucket list and I absolutely can’t wait to dive into it. Black Myth: Wukong, you are the first.

Universal praise
We’re not at all surprised to see universal praise for Elden Ring’s Shadow Of The Erdtree, but it’s comforting to know that FromSoftware is among that rare group of developers who’ve never actually made a jerk. I’d put them in the same company as Naughty Dog, Nintendo EAD and Larian Studios.

Sure, some of their games are better than others, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen them do really bad. From may actually be the most consistent of them all, as I think only Dark Souls 2 has come close to disappointing.

As someone who thoroughly enjoyed Elden Ring, there wasn’t much to stop me buying Shadow Of The Erdtree, except maybe the generally bad reviews. Unsurprisingly, we got the opposite and I couldn’t be more excited.

I’ve made sure I already have full access to Mohg’s little mausoleum and will travel to the Shadowlands as soon as I get off work on Friday. It might be a while before I leave!

PS: Again we see the best games embargoed on reviews that are days before the game is released. This show of confidence is almost more convincing than the reviews themselves. And the opposite is true, with publishers who clearly know they have a flop.

May to December
So I see that Microsoft and Nintendo must still be on good terms if Nintendo is doing a Perfect Dark port and even has online multiplayer.

Normally I would applaud collaboration in the games industry, but I can’t help but feel that Microsoft is playing the role of a two-faced young upstart trying to take advantage of an older relative. I can only imagine them trying to talk Nintendo into cloud gaming or letting them have Game Pass on the Switch 2. I’m sure Nintendo won’t fall for it.

Show don’t tell
An absolutely brilliant Nintendo Direct and with some real surprises even though Zelda was previously known. I really like the echo concept and think it could end up being a very different game, which is nice to see.

I really respect the fact that Nintendo didn’t just make this a Link-esque adventure game in all but name, but actually came up with a whole new style of play that justified the character change. I really liked the look and will almost certainly get one.

However, the most exciting game for me was Metroid Prime 4. Not only because I was waiting for it the whole time, but also because it looked really nice and… I’m convinced it was the Switch 2 version.

I really don’t see how you can get graphics like that on the Switch, so either it was some kind of pre-rendered trailer using “in-game assets” which Nintendo doesn’t usually do, or it ran on a Switch 2. Or rather a PC emulating the Switch 2, because that’s how games are made .

Some of the texture and detail work looked a little too good for the current Switch, and yet overall it felt maybe a little better than the PlayStation 4, which is where the new console is said to be in my opinion.

Nintendo said they wouldn’t talk about the Switch 2 but they never said they wouldn’t show it and I guess they did. I think we can now reserve Metroid Prime 4 as a Switch 2 cross-gen launch title and I can’t wait!

I’ll be honest, I had no idea there was an Uncharted movie. Aren’t both the leads too young for these roles? Neither of them look like their character.

Kudos to Director Elden Ring for wanting to protect his workers. I’ve always liked Japanese games more than most Western games, but now I have a good reason to just on principle.
