In iOS 17, Apple added a Check In feature to Messages that lets you let a loved one know you’ve returned home safely. With watchOS 11, Check In also comes to the Apple Watch, but it can only be activated in the Messages app.
Anyone who has used a Garmin watch is likely familiar with their LiveTrack feature, which creates a real-time view of your location during activity so friends and family can keep track of your progress. Strava Beacon offers a similar feature, and now with Check In integration, Apple Watch users can let their loved ones know they’ve also successfully completed their workout.
Just like on the iPhone, Apple Watch users can initiate Check In from Messages in watchOS 11. But the feature also works in the Workout app. When you start a workout, swipe right to reveal a new login option. So if you’re walking home after dark or going for an early morning run, you can let someone know you’ve started and Check In will let them know when you get home.
If something unexpected happens and you’re delayed, Check In automatically notifies your friend that you didn’t arrive as expected, telling them your location (if available), the route you took, and the battery status of your iPhone and cellular service for case they want to contact you.
There’s also a new option in Settings ➝ Exercise that lets you turn on Login Reminders, so your Apple Watch can remind you to submit a workout login whenever you start an outdoor workout.
Note that watchOS 11 is in developer beta, and some features can always change or be removed before Apple releases the new Apple Watch software to the public in the fall.
