A pub in Surrey is battling for the title of ‘Best City Pub’ in the country against rivals from Kent, London and North Yorkshire. With delicious food, award-winning drinks and unusual events, Farnham Castle is the only local pub on the list.
The castle describes itself as a “low-key gastropub” serving freshly prepared food. Located in the heart of Farnham, this cozy haven is suitable for everything from cocktail nights, coffee mornings and afternoon pub crawls.
Inside the central skylight and large windows, the dining room is bright and airy. There is also outdoor seating in the covered garden in the courtyard, as well as private rooms called ‘Library’ and ‘Market View’. Ideal for hosting parties and business meetings, the team is on hand to ensure the event runs as planned.
The pub said: “Our dining room has a light and airy feel, with a stunning central skylight and large windows throughout. Head out to our tranquil covered courtyard garden; a peaceful oasis in the hustle and bustle of the city.”

One Tripadvisor reviewer wrote that “I rented one of the castle’s private rooms for my 30th birthday. I was so impressed from start to finish! From prior communication regarding pre-order and payment to the day the room was completely flawless, I didn’t have to lift a finger. The staff was attentive and professional. I warmly recommend.”
No matter which part of the pub you sit in, there is plenty to choose from. The a la carte menu offers a range of seasonal options as well as pub classics, while the weekday sandwich menu is simple with five different lunch options with chips or salad.

One thing to look out for might be the Midweek Set offer where two courses can be bought for £16.95 and three courses for £20.95. Options include beef ragu ravioli and Cumberland pork sausages, as well as a sweeter crumble pie of the day or Amaretti affogato.
Just like a classic pub, Sunday roast is served, all with Yorkshire pudding, herb roast potatoes, a selection of seasonal vegetables, rich red wine gravy and all the traditional side dishes. Beef tenderloin, lion pork and beet Wellington are currently on offer.
This was something one reviewer praised last year, saying: “Great Sunday roast dinner with my family, nine year old included. The food was excellent with high quality roast beef and pork. These were accompanied by a very good selection of vegetables and Yorkshire puddings. The meat was exceptionally tender and all the food was piping hot which is great considering it was a very busy service. The portions were good and the food was great value.”
The pub also hosts events such as Euros watch parties and the more unusual Brush Party. An evening of showcasing your creative talent, what you paint will change every time with a helpful artist guiding you every step of the way to create a masterpiece. Everything is provided and you can have a drink from the bar while painting.
