Delving into the PS Plus history books.

Previously, the biggest game to hit PS Plus Premium was a game from Sony The Legend of Dragoon — the beloved PS1 JRPG joining subscriptions in early 2023. This PS1 classic has remained the top-performing game on PS Plus Premium for over a year, but was finally dethroned by none other than Sly Cooperfirst release on PS2.

During PS Plus launch week (week ending Sunday 16 June 2024) Sly Cooper and Thievius Raccoonus attracted 2.5% more players on PS5 and PS4 than The Legend of Dragoon administered in its own PS Plus launch week. It’s not a huge victory, but it’s still enough to achieve Sly Cooper the best performing PS Plus Premium game since the launch of the higher subscription tier in 2022.

The five best PS Plus Premium games so far

#1 — Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus (June 2024)
#2 — The Legend of Dragoon (February 2023)
#3 — Legend of the Tomb Raider (June 2024)
#4 — Twisted metal (July 2023)
#5 — Retribution of resistance (February 2024)

While Tomb Raider Legend also had a strong PS5 debut, Sly Cooper saw 39.66% more active PS5 and PS4 players in the same week. No other game released on PS Plus Premium could match these top three games in terms of player numbers.

Sly CooperA true PS2 classic.

Admittedly, it’s worth pointing out that there’s still a significant gap between what counts as a success on PS Plus Premium and what counts as a successful game on PS Plus overall. As for only games added to PS Plus Extra and Premium in 2024, Sly Cooper is only the eighth biggest PS Plus game of the year so far.

Is there a difference of 85.11%. in the number of active players between Sly Cooper and this year’s biggest PS Plus Extra game, Dave the diver. Zoom out a little further and you’ll remember that Dave the Diver is only the third biggest game to grace PS Plus Extra. So it’s important to remember that Sly Cooper is the biggest PS Plus Premium game we’ve seen on PS5 and PS4 so far, it’s still a relatively small piece of the pie as far as Sony is concerned. In the end, we have to reckon with the fact that Sly Cooper probably increased the number of participants less effectively than Tiny Tiny’s Wonderlands.

Sly Cooper PS PlusStill an underdog.

If anything, at least success Sly Coopera beloved PS2 classic, shows that Sony’s old favorites still have the power to command significant attention from PS Plus subscribers. Hopefully Sly’s strong debut will encourage Sony to bring more PS2 games to PS5 and PS4. Maybe one of these classic games will really make subscribers jump on the classic PS Plus Premium catalog one day.
