The ‘fastest and most protective helmet in the peloton’, Merida’s new high-end turbo and mid-price: Five Cool Things we’re reviewing

This week we have an exciting mix of product previews including a super aero helmet from Ekoi worn by the pros, a new high-end turbo trainer from Cycplus, best known for their mini electric pumps, a summer jersey from Gorewear, a light and aero bike from Merida with trickle-down technology and some camo shoes from Shimano. Ekoi Aerodinamica by Pininfarina Helmet (£329.90)


Ekoi is the helmet sponsor of WorldTour teams Cofidis and Arkéa-B&B Hotels, as well as ProTeams Israel Premier-Tech and Lotto-Dstny. The Aerodinamica by Pininfarina helmet was designed to offer these riders “the fastest and most protective helmet in the peloton,” the brand says.

Working with Koroyd, the helmet features a honeycomb construction that is designed to absorb 30% more impact energy than standard EPS.

The Aerodinamica by Pininfarina helmet is available in 3 sizes (S/M/L) and normally retails for £329.90. It is currently on the Ekoi website in all colors for half price.

CycPlus T3 High-Power Smart Bike Trainer (£860)

We’ve previously reviewed Cycplus products like its mini e-bike pumps, and now we’ve got our hands on the T3 High-Power Smart Bike Trainer.

Cycplus says the T3 delivers peak torque in excess of 110Nm, supports up to 2800W and simulates inclines of up to 27%. Unlike most power meters, which are calibrated using weights, the T3 smart trainer is said to use an internal calibration system with a torque sensor accurate to one-thousandth of a Nm.

The smart trainer comes with an 11-speed cassette pre-installed and is compatible with both fixed-axle and quick-release bikes, including adapters. Charlotte is currently reviewing it so check back in a few weeks to see what she has to say.

The Gorewear Spinshift Breathe Men’s Jersey is designed to be lightweight and breathable at high temperatures and at high intensity. It’s made from two different recycled materials with an open mesh that the brand says optimizes airflow and wicks away sweat.

Merida Scultura 4000 (£2,300)

The Merida Scultura 4000 is the entry-level model in the Scultura range with trickle-down technology from the Scultura Team bike used by WorldTour Team Bahrain Victorious.

The Scultura is a light and aero bike that has a full carbon frame. Merida says, “The Scultura demonstrates excellent compliance and provides the rider with class-leading ride comfort to help keep the body fresh for the final sprint or climb.”

For your money, you get a Shimano 105 12-speed groupset, Merida Expert SL wheels and handlebars, and an FSA two-piece cockpit.

Shimano RX6 Boots (£159.99)

According to the brand, the Shimano RX6 shoes are “gravel adventure shoes designed for a light and comfortable ride with an optimally balanced stiffness and gait”.

The shoes feature a carbon-reinforced nylon sole and BOA dials, as well as a new patented sole design with wider TPU lugs. They are available in two colors – black and green, both with a protective film.
