Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree kicks players’ asses, but an optional dungeon called the Fog Rift Catacombs evokes a special kind of desperation. After spending some time trapped in this place, I can see why – this dungeon is simultaneously the best, worst, and funnest thing FromSoftware has ever done.
This post will of course include spoilers for this one dungeon. Once you head over the large bridge that leads away from the DLC starting area, the map can draw your gaze north to a path that appears to lead to a new Shadow of the Erdtree map fragment for you to collect. This is FromSoft’s first trick. After going through a fortress with hordes of enemies raining down literal fire on you and surviving a misty valley full of stealthy little goblins trying to backstab you, you start getting messages from other players along the lines of “no map ahead, oh more tears.”
Then the valley path will take you to the Fog Rift Catacombs. At first glance, it looks like any other crypt-style dungeon in Elden Ring, with a bunch of stone paths and a few enemies tucked away in hard-to-spot places to scare you. Then come giant spike traps from the ceiling. Then there are the weird guys with misty mouths that spew fireballs at you like Birdo shooting eggs in Mario 2. Then you start to realize that you don’t just have to avoid these spiked traps, you have to ride them to find hidden paths.
In the misty cracks of the catacombs and honestly: what the hellJune 21, 2024
If you play online, you will continue to see messages from other players suffering from increasing levels of desperation. There is a room with some soldiers that you can take down fairly easily and fight one on one. The last enemy in this room is the knight with his back to you – and I really am I had he realized it was a trap but the secret guy just around the corner from this knight killed me anyway. By the time I arrived in this room, my level of desperation was right up there with all the messages I found.
Perhaps the ultimate middle finger that Fog Rift Catacombs gives you is a giant, long hall with another ceiling spike trap spanning the entire distance. At the far end is a wizard that throws machine gun style magic bolts at you. Between each spike trap drop, you must sprint across the room and dodge into side alcoves to avoid damage. Catch? The second alcove you dive into is actually just a hole that drops you into a sewer area where you have to fight what I can only describe as sentient piles of excrement.
“I want to challenge whoever made Fog Rift Catacombs to a cage fight,” as one Reddit thread put it, and I can see where the sentiment is coming from. I also understand why so many people call it “so much fun”, “10/10 catacombs” and “my favorite Elden Ring dungeon”. You can feel the level designers laughing at you to the point where it’s honestly kind of cute.
This post from Reddit user Magistraten sums it up for me: “This is honestly the funnest place in From Software’s history. Basically just a series of patented FromSoft pranks with you as the player as the point. It’s not particularly difficult, especially compared to the rest of the DLC, but damn it’s good you survived several bomb sneezes, various death traps, several messages that said “message first, then try the explosion” little goblin still alive?
Next, there is the boss of the entire dungeon, which is literally called Death Knight. As with many Shadow of the Erdtree bosses, the Death Knight has a lot of quick attacks that hit hard and extremely limited windows in which you can deal damage. The kicker is a rush grab where the boss grabs you and drains your life to restore its own health. Despite finally defeating the Death Knight, I still don’t know if it’s even possible to dodge the attack.

And when I was looking for comments on Fog Rift Catacombs to guide this story and justify my own complicated feelings on the DLC, I just discovered the above tweet and found that there is even more to find in this dungeon. Damn, I guess I’m not done yet.
