What is listeria?

Most people who catch listeriosis, caused by a bacteria called listeria, experience mild symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea.

However, more serious complications may develop in patients with weakened immune systems, infants, the elderly, and pregnant women, according to the FDA.

Many foods can contain listeria, but it is usually found in unpasteurized milk, soft cheeses, and ready-to-eat foods such as packaged sandwiches.
