Queue live at Birmingham Airport as passengers declare ‘health and safety disaster’

Passengers at Birmingham Airport this morning spoke of further long waiting times in the security queue. One holidaymaker described the scenes as a “health and safety disaster”.

The traveler estimated that there were more than 1,000 people waiting in line at 5:30 today, Thursday, June 27. He waited in line for an hour and still didn’t get to the elevators to go through security.

One passenger told BirminghamLive: “We’ve been queuing for over an hour and still haven’t got to the lifts. It’s literally a health and safety disaster as the animals wouldn’t be treated so badly. I estimate there are around 1,000+ at 05:30 people. in the queue it’s something like a third world operation.” BirminghamLive has contacted the airport for comment on the latest situation.


To facilitate the situation, a temporary structure was erected to control the liquid. The queuing problems were said to be partly due to the government’s changes to the 100ml liquid carry-on maximum.

The airport responded to the queue situation this morning – people queued for just over an hour during peak hours.

A spokeswoman for Birmingham Airport told BirminghamLive: “As predicted, today is always going to be a busy departure day. Our temporary structure was used for busier days like this as it was planned.

“During the main peak, customers queued for just over an hour, but the queue was constantly moving and customers were moving quickly through the terminal to access security.”

One passenger reported queuing problems had eased by their 9:15 a.m. flight.

On X, he wrote: “@bhx_official very pleasant passage through airport and security this morning. No queues for our 9.15am flight.”

100ml liquid limit rule for hand luggage

Birmingham Airport is reminding passengers of the 100ml liquid limit rule for hand luggage.

The airport posted: “All passengers departing BHX may only carry containers up to 100ml in liquids, pastes and gels in their hand luggage.

“Do not put them in plastic bags in hand luggage and do not take them out at security. There is no limit to the number of 100 ml containers being transported.”

‘I may never fly again’

A Ryanair passenger has revealed her ‘nightmare’ at Birmingham Airport, saying: ‘I may never fly again.’

Tessa Miller, who uses a mobility aid, claims “chaotic” scenes at the airport led to her missing her flight and being “stuck” on the return flight when her pre-booked ambulance lift “didn’t arrive”.

Mrs Miller, from Derby, has fibromyalgia, which causes severe pain and mobility problems, which she likens to feeling like walking through quicksand. The 47-year-old woman said she and her nine-year-old son, who has autism and ADHD, were made to feel like a problem by staff at Birmingham Airport.

A passenger at the airport reported that only one baggage check scanner was working at security.

He wrote on X: “@bhx_official here nice and early at 2:30am. All good until you get close to security and realize one of the six or seven scanners is working….unsurprisingly fast line backup!”
