Sony should never have made the PS5 and stuck with the PS4

Was the PS5 a bad idea? (Sony/Metro)

A reader suggests that Sony would be better off releasing a more advanced PS4 Pro rather than starting the current generation with the PS5.

We’ve had a lot of disgruntled PlayStation 5 owners write to us recently, but the one that caught my eye was last week’s Reader’s Feature about someone who said they wouldn’t bother buying one because they didn’t see the point. upgrade their PlayStation 4. As someone who has done it, I can sympathize with that, even if it means missing out on great exclusives like Demon’s Souls, Returnal, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

However, I can’t imagine these games not being possible on the PlayStation 4. Maybe the graphics wouldn’t be as good (probably not even Returnal), but they certainly don’t do anything that screams ‘this has to be next gen!’

Your mileage may vary, but I’d like to point out that I’m not sure Sony gained anything by making the PlayStation 5, and they seem to have lost an awful lot in terms of how much more expensive it is to make games now. .

However, it went great with the PlayStation 4. The games were good, the fans were happy, the PlayStation easily beat the Xbox… Sony was at the top of its game. At the end of the sales they started to decline, as they always do, but before making the PlayStation 5, couldn’t they just make a new model of the PlayStation 4? Super PS4 Pro or something.

For such a small improvement in graphics, this generation really doesn’t seem worth the trouble, not with all the problems it’s brought and with how short it seems to be. The only major change was the SSD, but make that part of the Super PS4 Pro and you have a unique selling point.

Obviously it’s too late now, but I’m not aware of anything that suggests Sony ever considered it, and they haven’t said anything that suggests they’re taking their time with the PlayStation 6. Instead, with Xbox already saying they’re working on a next-gen machine, I don’t expect it to be that long before Sony starts talking about its next console.

That’s stupid. There is no other word for it. Sony and Microsoft knew that this generation would be even more expensive to produce, but they went ahead with it anyway. That would be fine to some extent if they had some sort of plan to deal with it. But clearly not. Instead, it looks like they were caught off guard by the problem, which is… stupid.

And now they’re going to go ahead and make the exact same mistake again and make the problem worse. I can’t wait for those next generation games to take seven years to make and cost $400 million each!

If you’re reading this and think that deliberately holding back and not going with higher tech consoles when possible is a stupid thing to do, consider Nintendo. They’ve been doing this right since the Wii and last time I checked they’re fine. The way they talk also shows that they are thinking a lot more about the long term than PlayStation and Xbox ever seem to.

Someone out there has to figure things out, but I’d like to know what the plan is. I have a nasty feeling that the last step is “profit” and the previous one is just “???” – if you know what I mean.

So here’s my solution to the games industry’s current woes: buy a Sony time machine and discover the PlayStation 5. I’m sorry I couldn’t think of anything more practical.
