WHAT better snack to add to your picnic bag than a good pork pie.
They’re steadily falling out of fashion in the UK as more and more of us turn to sausage rolls as our on-the-go snack.
But there are some really tasty varieties on supermarket shelves now.
But which will please the taste buds the most?
We asked Lynsey Hope to find out. Here’s what happened:
Sainsbury’s Individual Melton Mowbray Pork Pie (140g)
The Sainsbury’s cake had a lovely homemade feel to it and I enjoyed it. It could have been meatier, with 30% pork, but what was inside had and nice flavor.
It wasn’t as greasy as other cakes and I liked the jelly.
Nothing to complain about and it’s a decent price.

Aldi Specially Selected Melton Mowbray Pork Pie (295g)
What a horror! I loved this gigantic cake which cost the same as the other cakes, many of which were only half size.
It was also super meaty, with 40% pork – the most of any pie in our test – and the meat was juicy and tasty.
The pastry was beautifully crunchy and not dry. Top product from Aldi.

Morrisons Melton Mowbray Small Pork Pie (140g)
The Morrisons pie was over spiced, perhaps with too much nutmeg and pepper.
The pastry was quite dark in color and seemed to me a bit over-baked and as a result too dry.
Perfectly edible, but this was not my favorite. Pretty small for the price too. For an extra 20p you get an extra 155g at Aldi.”

Tesco Melton Mowbray Pork Pie (145g)
A very nice pie with a neat crust and beautiful golden pastry. Good size too.
But the meat in this pie was not pickled and was supposed to look gray but had a light tinge pink to.
The jelly was nice and it was reasonably meaty, with 30% pork, but it all kind of blended together and the unique flavors really couldn’t be discerned.

Asda Melton Mowbray Pork Pie (295g)
The Asda pie was a little dry and lacked spice.
There wasn’t enough jelly, seasoning or meat. The pork content was 30% but the flavor didn’t come through and was lost on the taste.
Bland, unfortunately. I wouldn’t want it to ruin my picnic.

Waitrose Summer Melton Mowbray Pork Pie (273g)
Great cake from Waitrose. Not too much jelly and a lovely black pepper flavor.
The pastry was crispy and firm and contained a generous portion of 38% pork. A delicious addition to any picnic.

Lidl Deluxe Melton Mowbray Pork Pie (290g)
Loved the hand crimping on this cake which made it look really tasty.
I couldn’t wait to tuck in and was not disappointed with the taste.
The pastry was crumbly and tasty, and there was a generous portion of 39 percent pork.
The combination of flavors worked well here with a lovely helping of jelly to keep everything moist and together.
