I can’t stop hoping for a Dreamcast 2 and I know how Sega did it

Could there ever be a second Dreamcast? (Sega)

The reader is given hope that a Dreamcast 2 could finally be a possibility if Sega accepts his proposal to promote their new games.

No matter how many great games and amazing consoles have come out, we gamers can’t help but think about the one that got away. A sequel that never happened, a remaster that never happened (hello Bloodborne!) or a console they never had as a kid. For me that console is the Dreamcast 2 and the reason I never got it is… it doesn’t exist.

It felt like a huge blow at the time, but the Dreamcast was Sega’s last home console. Cut short in its prime by poor sales and outmaneuvered by the PlayStation 2, the Dreamcast was underfunded and doomed from the start. However, it’s still my favorite console of all time, and while I’ll admit a lot of that is down to nostalgia, I’d argue that it was the perfect marriage of Sega’s arcade heritage with modern home console gaming.

The Dreamcast was also innovative, with the first proper online service and games like Phantasy Star Online that were years ahead of their time. Nowadays, Sega is a shell of its former self, better known for stuffy PC strategy games than any of the classic franchises I associate it with.

I’d put up with the new Sega though, accepting that it’s just not the company I remember and instead hoping for the odd indie sequel like the excellent Streets Of Rage 4. Then out of the blue they announced they were making a bunch of new games based on on classic franchises such as Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Streets Of Rage and Shinobi.

Well, to be honest, they didn’t even announce them so much as show some random looking footage, walk away and not explain anything. There have been rumors of reboots, remakes, free-to-play live service games, maybe all of the above… nobody seems to know. According to the latest rumors, there may even be two Jet Set Radio games, so who knows what’s going on.

Whatever it is, there’s talk of a dozen or more other games being revived, including OutRun, Altered Beast, After Burner, and Virtua Fighter, though I guess that depends on how this first batch does.

Their plans seem a lot bigger than you’d expect from modern Sega, and there’s also talk of a hub, maybe something like Assassin’s Creed Infinity, where you’ll have access to all the games and do achievements and such. But, here’s my big idea… what if the hub was actually a piece of hardware? The legendary Dreamcast 2.

Obviously you wouldn’t want to force people to have to buy a console to play new games, but I would love for Sega to make an official Dreamcast 2 with a new controller, especially to launch these games. You can even add one or two more as a bonus to your console purchase.

The problem is that it would probably be quite expensive, but I’m hoping they can make streaming versions of the games and have the console play them over the cloud, so it wouldn’t have to be powerful or expensive. Although Sega will probably charge eager fans quite well.

It’s my idea anyway. It probably won’t happen, but at least we might get a controller. They can at least put a Dreamcast 2 logo on it, or call it a Dreamcast 2 hub, and then my dreams will at least partially come true.
