Was the next generation a mistake?

Would you be happy to play PlayStation 4 for another five years? (Sony)

The Monday Letters site isn’t surprised that smartphone owners don’t want to pay full price for games, as one reader tries to imagine the Elden Ring movie.

Force of habit
I found myself agreeing with a lot of what was said in the Reader’s Feature about Sony sticking with the PlayStation 4 instead of making a PlayStation 5. Microsoft had an excuse to make the Xbox Series X/S because the Xbox One did so poorly . , but looking at it objectively, I’m not sure there’s a good reason for Sony to make a PlayStation 5. It just seemed to happen because that’s what it usually does at this point in its previous console’s life.

No one seems to have explored trying to have longer generations, except, as usual, Nintendo. What PS4 Pro Ultra was a better idea than the PlayStation 5? I don’t know and Sony will never know unless they actually try. I guess they’re just taking a chance, but as usual that means you’re potentially ignoring the potential to do things better.

I think we could definitely benefit from leaving the graphics where they were for a generation or two until there is a cost effective way to use them. Those opportunities have now clearly been missed, but I suspect there are more than a few people on PlayStation right now who think Next Generation was a bad idea.

I agree that another Dead Rising remaster is the last thing I want Capcom to waste their time on. But if it’s just a remaster, hopefully it’s a pretty small project in terms of using their resources.

I’m actually reasonably hopeful that the new Marvel Vs. Capcom is coming in because even though Sony owns the X-Men license, I have a feeling they’d be quite happy to share a bit of the profit if it meant releasing a style of game they obviously couldn’t handle themselves.

What I love about games are the more obscure characters that Capcom throws in there for no reason. Like what was Shuma-Gorath doing in Marvel Super Heroes?! This is why I really love Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom because I have no idea what half the characters are, but I can only feel the love that was put into turning them into fighting game characters.

So yeah, it would be fun to see Squirrel Girl or anyone from Marvel, but I’m more interested in the Capcom side of things to see who they unexpectedly spotlight.

Rise further
It’s a shame that Dead Rising is just a remaster. I would like a remake with more open world elements of 3 and 4, but without the relentless Christmas spirit of 4. Also, lose the super-infected; they annoy the trap out of me.

Maybe if the remaster goes well, Capcom could make a new entry with real intelligent AI. For me, the best part of Dead Rising was having eight characters with AR-15s that completely flushed every boss you fought. Hopefully it stays that way.

Horrible bosses
RE: Starblade. I really enjoyed it and it was my game of the year, but the boss battles are a nightmare. I usually plow through them if necessary, but Unidentified Naytiba just got me and I switched to story mode. I feel unclean doing this, but I’ve had enough of spending ages chipping away at his health only to have it throw instakill fireballs at me and I die.

This is why I’m not getting the Elden Ring DLC - I just can’t be bothered dying over and over to annoying bosses at this point.

Ancient origin
You know how you sometimes just quote the lines and whatever from back when, well, my wife and I still say ‘OL Yade’ and ‘I’m saving it for you’ regularly, usually when we’re handing each other random things.

Your review just made us realize we’ve been saying this for over 20 years because I bought the original Beyond Good & Evil based on your original review!

I feel dead old now but glad to hear the game still holds up.

It feels very authentic and real to what Shigeru Miyamoto said about Nintendo’s ethos. Dealing with massively changing trends in audience spending on the final product, it’s not hard to see that even the corporate sheep could put in some hard work and determination to match and compete with other “faster and trendier” corporate ethos. which is trying to develop a lightning in a bottle formula to keep up with the rest. When I talk about others, I’m talking about faceless people. We know big brands.

There is no way I can guess what they are up to. I just hope they make Satoru Iwata’s memory and Mario triple jump into every achievement. I would have been a happy man if I had invested heavily in 2000.

It’s been a great time to be a player and I’m really excited for the future if the passion stays.

The mean diameter of the table
I’d argue that Black Flag isn’t really anywhere near the best of the series, classic or otherwise. I’d say Assassin’s Creed 2 was easily the best of the old school ones, with the best environments and characters and simplistic but enjoyable stealth and action.

I actually have a bit of a soft spot for Unity, but I think the more modern RPG style games are the best and they’ve all been good so far. For me, Mirage was quite a disappointment.

Black Flag is strictly middling fodder as far as I’m concerned. The pirate angle is good in theory, but I found the story to be quite tedious and the ship combat is fun but a bit silly in terms of any kind of realism.

A dream scenario
I love the guy’s optimism about the Dreamcast 2 over the weekend in the Reader’s Feature. It’s obviously not going to happen and I think he knows it, but it’s a cute idea. I think in a few years, when streaming becomes more straightforward, things like this could happen.

The idea of each publisher having their own subscription service like EA Play and Ubisoft+ seems to have cooled in recent years, I guess because they realize that everyone is sick of subscriptions at this point, but they love nothing more than selling all their games . direct fans who are not hindered by anything else.

Digital sales could take a cut of the money given to stores, but you still have to pay Microsoft or Sony a certain percentage, on top of the license fee, so whatever comes out, if the Dreamcast 2, to use the example mentioned, comes out. and you only paid Sega directly for it and its games.

Now, no one wants a console—virtual or otherwise—for every publisher, but there’s plenty of incentive for companies. It might put them off because that style of doing things hasn’t really worked on TV, but it has for Disney+ and a few others.

Does this mean I think we could be getting an actual Dreamcast 2 in the near future? No. But in the distant future? I might have seen it, although at that point who would have guessed what games it would run?

I love how nine Assassin’s Creed games in development sounds like a wild exaggeration at first, but then you look into it and it turns out that might be an understatement.

If Bend is working on a live service game, why couldn’t they make it a Days Gone game? It’s not that people don’t like zombies even if they haven’t played the original game.
