Resident Evil 9 Announced by RE7 Director: ‘It’s Essential’

Capcom has officially confirmed that it is working on a Resident Evil Village sequel, adding weight to rumors of an open-world game.

Resident Evil 9 is now officially in production, Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi has been announced as the director of the new game, whatever it will be called.

2017’s Resident Evil 7 was something of a soft reboot for the series after the disappointing fifth and sixth entries, and had a much stronger horror feel than them and the subsequent Village. It is not yet known whether this will also be the case with Resident Evil 9.

The announcement was made during a spot at Friday night’s Capcom Next showcase, but there was no indication of when the full reveal would take place or what release date the game was aiming for.

“We’re creating a new Resident Evil. It was really hard to figure out what to do for the seventh time,” Nakanishi said.

“But I found it, and to be honest, it seems essential. I can’t share any details yet, but I hope you look forward to the day when I can.’

At first glance, this doesn’t seem to offer any information, but many rumors have already suggested that the new game will be open-world (reportedly using the technology from Dragon’s Dogma 2), which would surely be a major change for the franchise.

However, Resident Evil rumors have been conflicting lately, and it’s hard to tell if it’s due to bad information or because Capcom has changed its mind.

The latest suggestion is that the game is still slated for release next year, with a likely reveal at The Games Awards in December – especially as Capcom has used Geoff Keighley’s events several times in the past to announce new games.

As for the rest of the Capcom Next event, there was a lot going on with the new Dead Rising remaster – which is definitely a remaster, not a remake.

The upcoming Ace Attorney Investigations and Marvel Vs. The Capcom compilation also got some screen time, as did Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess, which gets a free demo that we highly recommend checking out.

Capcom’s next big release is Monter Hunter Wilds, which is coming out next year, but currently doesn’t have a release date. Because of that, it’s hard to know if he or Resident Evil 9 will come out first if it’s nearing completion.

Resident Evil 9 could potentially be released late next year, but we’d imagine that early 2026 is probably a more realistic release window, although there hasn’t been any real pattern in the release months of the last few modern titles – although Resident Evil 7 did come out in January.
