A Delta Airlines flight bound for Amsterdam has made an emergency landing in New York after dozens of passengers were given spoiled food and became ill during the flight.

Delta Flight 136 was traveling from Detroit, Michigan to the Netherlands when it was diverted to JFK Airport early this morning after it was discovered that some of the on-board food was spoiled, a Delta spokesperson told DailyMail.com.

Paramedics met the plane after it landed at JFK Airport and treated the 14 passengers and 10 crew members, all of whom refused medical attention.

Passengers have been provided with hotel rooms and transport, a Port Authority spokesman confirmed, saying all “will be rebooked to continue to their destination”.

The disruption on Wednesday morning came as millions took to American skies for one of the busiest travel days of the year. The TSA has warned that 32 million will fly this week for the Fourth of July, adding pressure to an already stretched airline industry.

One seemingly frustrated flight passenger took to social media to ask how the airline was “going to get me to Amsterdam today” after it had to divert “because you were serving ‘contaminated’ food to passengers on the plane.”

The A330, which had 277 customers on board, departed Detroit Wayne County Metropolitan Airport just before 11 p.m. Tuesday.

The flight crew decided to divert to NYC where they learned that some passengers had been served spoiled food.

Delta says the crew consulted with medical experts who recommended diversion.

The flight landed safely at JFK around 4 a.m. Wednesday, where passengers and crew were met by medical personnel.

“There were 24 cases of assistance on landing, including 10 flight crew and 14 passengers, all of whom refused medical attention,” a Port Authority spokesperson told DailyMail.com.

“Passengers have been given hotel rooms and transport and will be rebooked to continue to their destination.”

Virginia, who was apparently on the plane, tweeted at the airline after the plane made an emergency landing. She said: “I need to know how you’re going to get me to Amsterdam today – I’m on a plane making an emergency landing at JFK because you’ve been serving ‘contaminated’ food to passengers.

“I don’t need hotel/food vouchers, I have to come to Amsterdam today.”

A spokesperson for Delta told DailyMail.com that its teams are investigating the incident and have apologized to their customers (photo).

A spokesperson told DailyMail.com: “Delta Flight 136 from Detroit to Amsterdam was diverted to New York’s JFK early Wednesday morning after it was discovered that some of the on-board food was spoiled.

“Medical crews were on site to meet the aircraft and treat all affected passengers and crew.” Delta teams will immediately work to gather information on how this incident occurred.

“This is not the service that Delta is known for, and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delay in their travels.”

It comes after a separate Delta plane was forced to make an emergency landing at JFK in April after the plane’s emergency chute fell off.

Los Angeles-bound Delta Flight 520 was diverted back to JFK around 8:30 a.m. on April 26. The plane was an hour into the journey when a strange incident triggered the emergency alarm.

There were no injuries on board the Boeing 767, which was carrying 176 customers, two pilots and five flight attendants at the time.
