What is a connection?

Connections is a word puzzle game published daily by the NYT, host of the endlessly popular Wordle puzzle. Created daily by crossword creator Wyna Liu, the connection gives you a choice of 16 seemingly disparate words to group into four sets of four, with each group of four words sharing a common theme.

For example, the words “Hook”, “Nana”, “Peter” and “Wendy” are all Peter Pan characters. Or to take another example, “Action”, “Ballpark”, “Go” and “Stick” are all words that commonly occur right before the word “Figure”.

It’s your job to figure out what these themes are that connect the different words together – but be careful, because often the red herring connectors are placed there on purpose to throw you off! To win the game, you must find all four connections without making 4 mistakes. On your fourth mistake, the game ends and the answer is revealed automatically.

Each of the four groups in each day’s Connection puzzle is also assigned a different color to represent how easy or difficult it is to find the Connection. These colors are: yellow (easiest), green (easy), blue (medium) and purple (hardest).
