We have some non-answers regarding select platforms for one of the upcoming PlayStation games.
LEGO Horizon Adventures, a LEGO version of PlayStation’s Horizon games, which is being developed in collaboration between Guerrilla Games and Studio Gobo, is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Nintendo Switch, the latter of which is remarkably unusual for the latter. – PlayStation Studios MLB games. Despite being much more cross-platform than normal, the game has not been announced for Xbox consoles.
Guerrilla Games director James Windeler, in an interview with Stephen Totil in his single-player bulletin Game File (where he also discusses the preparation of the upcoming PlayStation 5 title Astro Bot), noted that the game was meant to push the PlayStation 5’s hardware and “look as awesome as possible may be” in the system.
When asked by Totilo why it was coming to the Nintendo Switch, Windeler explained that the decision helped the team go after a “family audience and a younger audience” than would otherwise have been possible. When asked about Xbox, Windeler simply said that “You know, we don’t really have anything to announce about Xbox right now.”
LEGO Horizon Adventures is set to launch later in 2024
Like other LEGO games, LEGO Horizon Adventures offers full cross-platform co-op on PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Nintendo Switch. Players can collect LEGO versions of characters like Aloy and Varl and tackle machines like Thunderjaw.
There is currently no release date, but when the game was revealed earlier in the year as part of Summer Game Fest 2024, it was announced that it would be released later in the year.
Analysis: Not too surprising, but still interesting
While the way he doesn’t answer is funny, it seems pretty obvious what’s really going on. For PlayStation, this kind of game only makes sense if it has a wide audience, which can’t be completely guaranteed even for PlayStation 5 and PC gamers, but the company also can’t bring it to PlayStation 4 because it needs to push its own newer hardware. As a result, the best option that can be found is to launch it on the Nintendo Switch.
As for the Xbox, while it definitely won’t be included at launch, I don’t think an eventual port is entirely out of the question. PlayStation already brings MLB games to Xbox, so porting games like LEGO Horizon Adventures after the initial wave of players has already gathered elsewhere makes some sense.
Regardless of what happens, the list of PlayStation Studios games on Windows PC is growing faster than ever, and it’s abundantly clear that PlayStation (like Xbox) is no longer completely limited to a single piece of console hardware.
By the way, kudos to Totil for the work he puts into Game File. He also talks to the Asobi team about the upcoming awesome looking Astro Bot in his latest newsletter and I recommend reading it.
