iPhone 16 is just months away: Everything we know so far

Apple introduced a suite of AI features on its debut Worldwide Developers Conferenceand makes us wonder what gadgets the next iPhone will bring besides artificial intelligence.

We’ve heard whispers about the iPhone 16’s features, which are said to range from a new energy-efficient display to larger screens, better zoom lenses, an action button and, perhaps unsurprisingly, a suite of new AI-powered features.

However, the iPhone 16 is still likely two months away and nothing will be confirmed until Apple’s iPhone event in the fall. Still, these rumors could give us an idea of what to expect from the next iPhone.

Here are the most credible iPhone 16 rumors.

Will the iPhone 16 be foldable?

Probably not. The latest rumors suggest that Apple is working on iPhone Flip models in two different sizes, although there have been difficulties in creating the device to Apple’s standards. The company may also be working on a foldable tablet with a screen the size of an iPad Mini. While virtually every major phone maker — from Google to Oppo to OnePlus and Samsung — has launched their own foldable phones, Apple has been characteristically tight-lipped about whether there will ever be an iPhone Flip or an iPhone Fold.

Earlier rumors said that Apple might not launch its own device with a flexible screen until 2025. Samsung hasn’t let phone fans forget that – by releasing an app that will allow Apple phone owners to have a Z Fold-style experience by placing two iPhones side by side. – lateral.

iPhone 16 design with thinner bezels

Rumors of larger screen sizes have been piling up, at least for select iPhone 16 models. The latest comes from Korean publication Elec, which published a report in April that select iPhone 16 models are set to adopt innovative screen technology, resulting in thinner bezels or bezels around the phone’s screen . This development could translate into a slightly larger screen area on some iPhone 16 models, although it is not clear which models.

Apple has historically introduced display upgrades in its professional line of products before sometimes rolling them over to lower-end models. The report states that display manufacturers have introduced a new edge-reduction structure technology that enables more compact control circuits and ultimately leads to slimmer bezels.

iPhone 16 Pro models with larger screens

Speaking of screen sizes, Apple has maintained two screen sizes for iPhone Pro models since 2020 when it launched the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. However, this is said to change with the iPhone 16 Pro models, which could get larger screens.

Display analyst Ross Young suggested earlier this year that the iPhone 16 Pro models will have larger screens, with sizes coming in at 6.3 inches for the iPhone 16 Pro and 6.9 inches for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The rumor was later confirmed by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who said the iPhone 16 Pro models could grow by “several tenths of an inch diagonally”.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models are believed to stick with the current 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes. If the size increase is accurate, it would be another move by Apple to differentiate its Pro iPhone models from its regular ones.

iPhone 15 screen size

  • iPhone 15: 6.1 inches
  • iPhone 15 Plus: 6.7 inches
  • iPhone 15 Pro: 6.1 inches
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max: 6.7 inches

The iPhone 16 screen size is listed

  • iPhone 16: 6.1 inches
  • iPhone 16 Plus: 6.7 inches
  • iPhone 16 Pro: 6.3 inches
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max: 6.9 inches

The iPhone 16 will have more AI tricks

Artificial intelligence is perhaps the biggest tech buzz of the year, and Apple has followed in the footsteps of rivals Samsung and Google, each trumpeting new tips and tricks for AI on their flagship phones. Apple Intelligence debuted during the Worldwide Developers Conference in June. It brings ChatGPT integration, tools for proofreading and rewriting text in a different tone, new Siri features to get technical support and answer more customized requests, and the ability to generate images and emoticons, among others. These new AI features are expected to ship on all models of the upcoming iPhone 16 series with iOS 18 out of the box.

iPhone 16 design: New action button?

In March, AppleInsider published a collection of photos that purportedly show 3D printed mockups of mock iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models. The images revealed that the iPhone 16 may have a vertical camera stack as opposed to a diagonal one and an action button, similar to last year’s iPhone 15 Pro.

Could the iPhone 16 have a more energy-efficient display?

Another change that could make it to the iPhone 16 displays is higher energy efficiency. Samsung Display is apparently developing a new set of materials called M14 specifically for Apple, according to a report by TheElec, which says the new technology should arrive in iPhones launched next year. The M14 will replace the blue fluorescent technology currently in use with blue phosphorescent technology, creating an even more energy-efficient screen than the current LTPO used in the Pro models, the report said.

iPhone 16 cameras could get a longer zoom

Both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max could have 5x telephoto lenses next year. According to Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo, the square lens will make its way to both Pro models next year, as opposed to just the Pro Max. Apple equipped the iPhone 15 Pro with a 12-megapixel 3x optical zoom, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a 12-megapixel camera with 5x optical zoom, which is the equivalent of a 120mm lens on a full-frame camera.

If the rumor is true, it could mark a breakthrough in design. When Apple launched the 15 Pro Max with the 5x telephoto lens, it stated the phone’s larger body, why the Pro Max had it but the Pro didn’t.

iPhone 16 Pro: Less lens flare?

According to a recent leak revealed by MacRumors, Apple may be exploring a new approach to improve photo quality. The rumor suggests that the company could add anti-reflective technology to the camera’s manufacturing process. If successful, this could potentially eliminate unwanted artifacts such as lens flare, resulting in more realistic photos.

iPhone 16 processors: A18 chip for all models?

After a hiatus for the past two years, all four iPhone 16 models will apparently receive Apple’s next-generation chipset, all of which will receive the A18 branding. According to a MacRumors report citing Jeff Pu, executive analyst at Haitong International Securities, all four models will have an A18-series chip, with the iPhone Pro models getting the A18 Bionic Pro and the base models getting the regular A18.

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus currently have the A16 Bionic, which debuted in 2022 on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, while the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max run on the A17 Pro processor. Pu says the A18 chip will be manufactured using TSMC’s state-of-the-art 3-nanometer process.

Will the iPhone 16 get any new colors?

Well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has color predictions for the iPhone 16 series. In a post on X in May, he said that the blue color of the iPhone 15 Pro will be discontinued and replaced by a new pink model that will be available for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. He also predicted that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will be available in white, replacing the yellow model.

When will the iPhone 16 be released?

Apple holds its annual iPhone event in September almost every year, so we would expect the timeline to remain the same for the iPhone 16. New iPhones are usually launched shortly after, usually on the Friday of the following week. Sometimes Apple moves the release dates of specific models, especially when introducing a new design or size. So it is possible that the iPhone 16 series will have more than one release date.

What we know so far

Apple tends to hold its events on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. The iPhone 15 event took place on Tuesday, September 7. The iPhone 14 event was held on Wednesday, September 7, and the iPhone 13 event was held on Tuesday, September 14.

iPhone release dates are usually a week and a half after Apple’s announcement.

Generally, new iPhones are released on Fridays, around the third week of September. Pre-orders for the iPhone 13 began on September 17, and the phones went on sale on September 24.
