Sometimes I think I’m the only one happy with my PS5

Are people too down on PS5? (Sony)

Feeling exasperated by the constant bad news for gaming, the reader admits he’s been perfectly happy with the PS5 so far.

It’s getting harder and harder to feel any positivity about the games industry these days. Although it turned out to be a great year for games and the rest of the year is looking pretty good. I realize there are big issues with the layoffs and I’m not heartless about it, but at the same time there’s nothing I can do about it – except buy and play their games so at least they don’t get fired for making flops.

I bought a PlayStation 5 in early 2021 and have been very happy with it since day one. I got Demon’s Souls and Spider-Man: Miles Morales with it and both were excellent in very different ways. Astro’s Playroom was an unexpected (and free) bonus and it was very good too, one of the best games I’ve ever played.

A few months later I got Returnal and it was even better. I’ve seen people argue that the graphics could have been made on the PlayStation 4, but whether that’s true or not, it’s one of the best games I’ve played in a long time, and a very clever mix of third-person shooters, bullet hell, and roguelike.

The next game I got was Horizon Forbidden West, which still has the best graphics I’ve ever seen in a game. Yes, the gameplay isn’t as good in comparison, but it’s not bad and I didn’t find it too easy.

From there I went to God Of War Ragnarök which was just as good as the last game and very emotional at the end. Then coming up to date I got Helldivers 2 this year which was and still is excellent.

Of course, this is in addition to the non-exclusive third-party games, and there are other exclusives that have been reviewed very well, but which do not appeal to me. (I’ve never liked Final Fantasy, and I don’t really enjoy Stellar Blade – although I can give it a go if it’s cheap.)

My point is that I think it’s a very good lineup of games for the first three years and that’s just what I happened to be playing, not everything that’s out there. I realize plans have slowed down a lot recently, but it’s not like they’ve stopped, with Sony sensibly filling in the gaps with paid exclusives.

I’m not trying to downplay the problems in the gaming industry, but I’ll admit that I barely understand them, and I can assure you that the average consumer has no idea that this is even going on. Will the PlayStation 5 become the best console ever? I dont know, probably not. But that seems like a pretty extreme expectation.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s a very successful follow-up to the PlayStation 5, and I’m currently looking forward to Astro Bot and, based on Helldivers 2, Concord.

I hope the gaming industry will sort itself out, I really do, but when it comes to providing a variety of fun games that are good value for money, I have absolutely no complaints about the PlayStation 5.
