Games Inbox: Will the PS6 be a flop?

We may never get as far as the PS9 (Sony)

The Monday Letters page is angry about it Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree only gets a 9/10 as one reader asks about Tomba’s link.

Limitations
I’ve owned a PlayStation 5 for almost three years, and the only exclusives I’ve played are Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and the Astro Bot game, with nothing else particularly interesting. Oh, and a few PlayStation VR2 titles.

I can’t be eccentric. The PlayStation 4 now seems to be the sweet spot where the games were fleshed out but relatively powerful and fast and there was plenty of variety. I don’t see any reason to buy a PlayStation 5, and I won’t have the urge to buy a PlayStation 6. Anecdotally, from personal experience, I think the next generation will tank.

The tipping point has been reached.

Keep it small
I agree with the former Skyrim developer about modern open world games and really modern games in general, I feel like they are made with a checklist and committee mindset. And I can easily imagine that it’s because there are so many people working on the game that any sense of artistic control disappears. At that point it’s just a production line and no one can know what everyone is doing.

Nintendo and FromSoftware and most Japanese developers have much smaller teams than Western developers, which you can tell just by watching the titles of their games. They seem to be benefiting from it in every possible way. Yes, maybe the graphics aren’t necessarily the best they could be, but smaller teams have a lot of other positives.

You can’t make an open world game with a small indie team, but still remember what was done with No Man’s Sky and such a small group of people. It can be handled and the bottom line is better and I would imagine more profitable games.

Secret ports
I’m looking forward to the recently announced Donkey Kong Country Returns HD for Switch as I’ve never had a chance to play it on Wii or 3DS. It is interesting to note that the game was already released in HD with more traditional controls for the Nvidia Shield in 2019.

The only other Wii games released were Zelda: Twilight Princess, which now seems dated after releasing bells and whistles on the Wii U; Super Mario Galaxy 1, which was arguably the basis for the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collectible port; New Super Mario Bros. Wii; and Punch-out!!

We’ve already had one new Mario port, but I’ve seen it or Punch-Out!! break ground in the next year or two as the hard work has already been done and it’s in Nintendo’s best interest to put some focus on such a popular console. Are there any other secret Nintendo ports I don’t know about?
ANON

GC: These are pretty secret; they were supposed to be available only in China and not available anywhere else. One little-known fact we can add is that Id Software’s first project was a proposal for Nintendo for a PC version of Super Mario Bros. 3. Nintendo called it “impressive” but told them they “don’t want their intellectual property to be wasted.” but their own hardware.”

Wii U too
I agree with reader James that the Switch 2 needs an extra strip in the toothpaste rather than just more power. A portable device needs less power to have an efficient battery. Nintendo games don’t need photorealism, they have an artistic flair thanks to professional animation and artistic abstraction and are better for it.

On-screen pointer, dual screens, 3D, color-coded controllers… all worked well, but as I wrote a year ago, Nintendo’s next step should be light extended specs.

Full VR will never be accepted by the mass market, but some partial VR for inventory or maps would be fantastic. When I think back, the second screen on the Wii U gamepad was an underused joy. Perhaps another Wii U-like secondary gamepad design?

Waiting for new Nintendo hardware is like waiting for a new Coen Brothers movie or Stephen King book – you know it’s going to be a product designed with skill, love and 200% effort.

Moving out of the way
I agree with Harvey, it wasn’t a bad year for games and this time next year the only game on everyone’s mind is the massive GTA 6. This time next year everyone will be counting down the days until it comes out.

I have a feeling it will come out sometime in October, the next Call Of Duty comes out in December so it won’t affect sales. There won’t be anything big for about two months between the release of GTA 6, next year will be a massive gaming year and it will only be one game.

Return of the evil swine
For Beyond Good & Evil fans like myself, the recently released remaster will be available for physical pre-order this Friday from Limited Run Games. I’m going to pick up the PlayStation 5 version, but the game is also available on Xbox Series X/S, Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC in standard editions (but not PC) and
Collector’s Edition.

On the topic of Limited Run Games, I’m thinking about picking up a physical copy of Tomba! Special Edition, what is GameCentral’s take on the first and second games? Because I’ve never played them and I’d love to try them out if GameCentral and readers feel good about them. The originals are extremely expensive on the PS1 so this will be a cheaper way to have a physical copy.

Please note that when ordering from Limited Run Games, you must wait for the game to be produced and shipped to you after the pre-order window closes.

Just finished: Beacon Pines on PC (it was very good!)

GC: It has been a very long time since we played both games. They were certainly interesting for their non-linearity at the time, but underneath they were pretty basic platformers.

Cheap trip
I see, Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is currently 70% off on the PlayStation Store, which is a bargain. I got it from the Nintendo Store a while ago for a discounted price on Switch.

I didn’t even know this game existed in 2019! Either way, after waking up in a messed up hotel room with no memory of what happened before, it’s a mind-blowing trip into reality that you struggle to cope with!

There is a dead body outside at the back of the hotel with indications of an incident with possible major social consequences! But your mind needs to be put back together in terms of who you are, what you are doing in this area, and the meaning of your existential crisis. All you see around you is a brutal hardscrabble society dominated by governments with historically problematic ambitions, including trade and commerce with each other, but also wars.

Workers stage union demonstrations and corporate mercenaries threaten citizens, causing discord and unrest among everyday life. It’s an adult game that’s mainly about investigating a murder, covering a very brutal subject that includes ethical and psychological issues that some may find hard to stomach! But you will be guaranteed a very distant, graphically amazing riot of a story.

So tidy up your literal mind palace and explore a city where literally anything can happen. The repetition factor is huge as the different paths and choices create a branching story to so many different ways to find an ending that suits your character. After surviving this gaming experience, you will never be the same.

No change
With it being 30 years this year, I thought it would be rude not to play through Super Metroid again (on my Classic SNES Mini).

What a wonderful game it still is. I’m very curious to know what other retro games GC/GC readers think are actually as good as the day they were released?

GC: Crazy Frog Racer is just as good today as it was in 2005.

Offensively low
RE: Shadow Of The Erdtree 9/10 score. 9/10 is an insult to the game.

The cons from your Elden Ring: Shadow of Erdtree TLDR review make no sense.

How is everyone doing:

32 new bosses, 70 new weapons, 10 new shields, 39 new talismans, 14 new spells, 28 new incantations, 20 new spiritual ashes, 25 new war ashes, 30 new armor sets, 8 new fighting styles and lots of new crafting materials, not game innovation? What other innovations do you want to be able to fly your kite? Sail? Because they were unreasonable, they gave us a lot of game innovations.

Since the difficulty is more variable than the parent game, the difficulty is only as variable as you make it with your playstyle. As for it being more difficult, if that’s what you meant then yes, it goes beyond the base game Elden Ring from levels 120-150 so it will be more challenging, everything in the DLC should be more difficult than the base game. .

However, the worst comment is about DLC access being needlessly obscure. DLC is not a standalone story or add-on to the game that can be accessed outside of the main game, it is an extension of the main game’s story. There’s nothing wrong with that, I don’t know much about the lore, but Miquella, Mohg, and Radahn are all connected to the withered arm and the lore of the Shadow Realm, so it exists as it should, an expansion near the end of the Elden Ring game.

Being able to just skip to DLC wouldn’t make sense. If you’re playing the game with the mindset of rushing through the DLC because you’ve already played the base game, which it seems like you will, then yes, it will feel like a chore to get through the base game of Elden Ring, but it’s not like that. it’s meant to be played, how is this a game bug and why would it negatively affect the game in your rating?

You have to do better.
Further

GC: We feel like you’ve got the wrong end of the stick on almost everything; including whether 9/10 is a good score or not. However, flying a kite and going on a boat would be a great idea.
