A police incident on Shadwell Street lives on as officers involved in a three-hour cordon

Police have closed part of a Birmingham road amid an ongoing incident this afternoon. Uniformed officers are at the scene in Shadwell Street.

Images taken at around 12.30pm today, July 8, show uniformed officers and a marked police car servicing the area. A blue and white police cordon was placed across part of the road, close to Princip Street, to block public access.




West Midlands Police said they were called to Shadwell Street shortly before 11am. The force said officers were “working to resolve the incident” and a small cordon had been erected in the meantime.

The ribbon stretches across the front of the William Booth Centre, a Salvation Army support service which helps people struggling with homelessness in the city.

“Matter resolved safely”, say police

Police confirmed the man had safely descended from the roof of the William Booth Center and was sent for support.

A force spokesman said:

The man has now come down and the matter is safely settled.

He has now been referred to mental health professionals.

Police fear ‘man on roof of homeless center’

Police were called to Shadwell Street this morning following “concerns for the welfare of a man on the roof” of the William Booth Centre, we can confirm.

Officers set up a small cordon as they worked to resolve the incident. Fortunately, it is understood that the incident has now been safely resolved.

Emergency services, including police officers and an ambulance, were seen at the back of William Booth Lane this afternoon. We are now awaiting word from West Midlands Ambulance Service to see if there were any injuries or if an ambulance was on the scene.

The police cordon has now been removed from Shadwell Street and it is understood the incident has been brought to an end. We hope to hear confirmation from the police soon and will bring you updates as soon as we get them.

An incident response unit from West Midlands Ambulance Service has just arrived at the scene as police continue to try to deal with the ongoing incident. The cordon remains in place across part of Shadwell Street.

A three-hour police cordon

Uniformed police have been on the scene for three hours. Officers were called to the incident in Shadwell Street at 10.50am this morning.

A cordon was erected across the William Booth Centre, a support service for the homeless, which now remains in place.

“Large police presence”

Police have closed the end of William Booth Lane and most of Shadwell Street, our reporter on the scene says. There is a heavy police presence on Shadwell Street, outside the William Booth Centre, and the cordon stretches for about 15 metres.

This is the latest footage from the incident, which has lasted nearly three hours.

Incident at the Homeless Support Center

The incident continues at the William Booth Center on Shadwell Street, near where the road meets Princip Street. Police were called to the street at 10.50am and have since closed a small section of the road in front of the homeless support centre.

The Salvation Army Center provides initial accommodation and support to people experiencing homelessness. We contacted the center’s staff for more information.

Police are ‘working to resolve the incident’

Police confirmed they were called to Shadwell Street, which adjoins Princip Street, shortly before 11am today (Monday 8 July). West Midlands Police said it had closed part of the road while it “works to resolve the incident”.

In a statement, a spokesman for the force said:

A small cordon is in place while we work to resolve the incident.
