Blizzard Talks Diablo 4’s Spiritborn and Why They Didn’t Make a Paladin, Amazon, or Monk

Diablo 4 now showcases the new Spiritborn Vessel of Hatred class in full, with new hands-on tech demos, trailers, interviews, and more. While I wasn’t able to attend the demo in person, I did get a chance to speak with game director Brent Gibson and class designer Bjorn Mikkelson about the main question everyone had when Spiritborn was revealed.

Why this class? Why create a whole new class at this point when so many fans are still asking for the old reprisals from Paladin/Crusader to Amazon to Monk and more? Well, they had a lot to say and most of it is about the freedom that a brand new class offers, rather than having to pull from old roles and movesets, even though they did that with the base game.

Gibson said, “When we started, Gibson said, “we were still developing the core game, which was interesting because we were very happy with where the original five classes were going and we knew they were going to really nail the archetypes of these existing classes . represented in previous games.”

“There were a few things we wanted to make sure of,” Gibson continued. “The first thing was we wanted it to feel fresh, we wanted it to feel new, as opposed to constantly rebuilding what we’ve done before. Here’s an opportunity to look at the gaps we have in our fighting style, to look at power fantasies we haven’t done yet, and to develop something that was fresh that could stand alongside those original classes. The other thing was that we wanted it to come from where we were going, and we knew we were going into the jungle… and that set us on a path to create something completely new.”

They confirmed to me that yes, the Spiritborn will have a major role in the actual story of Vessel of Hatred, rather than just being handed to you and kept aside. They will also have a low-level specialization quest that unlocks the ability to combine the spirit bonuses of their four main summoned spirits, Fire Jaguar, Physical Gorilla, Poison Centipede, and Light Eagle. These spirits aid you in combat rather than transforming into them as you would a Druid.

One of the main points of creating a new class like the Spirtborn was that they could make it exactly what they wanted instead of having to draw from older classes. In that case, they wanted him to excel at “hybridization.”

“It’s kind of like a cop when we say the role we’re filling is a ‘flex’ role, which is kind of all slots,” Mikkelson said, “but the big experimentation has been what we can do when we start thinking from the top down. what if we create a character that is truly capable of hybridization? A lot of our classes can be a little more like “stick to your lane” and do one thing or the other, and they all have their place.

“Relating to spirits is really a personal choice, a really self-expressed choice where everyone is a little different,” Mikkelson continued. “You can choose your spirits and what combination you want, it just seemed like a very natural marriage between it being very customizable and having options for hybridization.”

You can see a lot of Spiritborn footage bouncing around the internet and with at least some martial arts focus, Gibson says Monk fans will be happy, but yes, it should be unique to all the past classes with the giant spirits you can summon. in the battle.

It’s certainly not out of the question that the previous classes missing from Diablo 4 could be added in future content, including expansions, although nothing is even remotely confirmed. They said it takes longer to create a brand new class from concept to execution than revising a previous class, but in any case I don’t expect more than one of those per year.

Between this and Diablo Immortal’s Blood Knight, Blizzard has shown a lot of interest in new Diablo classes lately. I’m betting they’ll go back to the old class next time (my money’s still on Paladin), but if Spiritborn throws everyone out, maybe not. I look forward to getting my hands on it when Vessel of Hatred comes out on October 8th.
