Dyson launches OnTrac wireless noise canceling headphones

It’s fair to say that few companies have disrupted as many markets as Dyson. From launching the world’s first bagless cyclone vacuum to innovative fans and advanced hair stylers, the British engineering company has a reputation for innovative technology and some extraordinary styling.

Another business Dyson intends to disrupt is the wireless headphone market. That is right. Dyson is looking to enter one of the most crowded and competitive sectors with its engineering know-how and the kind of eye-catching design that Dyson is known for.

Dyson claims its new OnTrac headphones offer best-in-class active noise cancellation thanks to technology that samples sounds 384,000 times per second and reduces unwanted noise by up to 40dB thanks to eight sound-sampling microphones. External audio is monitored and reported in real-time via the MyDyson smartphone app.

Like ANC, the new Dyson headphones will offer improved sound coverage with a frequency range of 6Hz to 21kHz. The headphones will support SBC, AAC and LDAC audio codecs, but lack support for Quacomm’s Snapdragon Sound or the aptX Lossless family of codecs.

OnTrac headphones have two built-in lithium-ion batteries, each with a capacity of 2,540 mAh. A full charge takes a few hours and provides up to 55 hours of listening time with ANC on. Dyson claims this should last a few weeks of use before topping up.

As you’d expect from Dyson, the OnTrac headphones have a uniquely Dyson style and there are over 2,000 customizable color combinations with interchangeable outer covers and ear cups. Each earcup is made from an ultra-soft microfiber material and high-quality foam that gives the OnTrac a comfortable fit as well as an improved acoustic seal.

Jake Dyson is the company’s chief engineer. He says: “Dyson’s audio engineering mission is to preserve the integrity of the artist’s sound wave without interference. We also wanted to create a set of headphones that people would appreciate, be excited about, and be proud of.

“With more than 30 years of experience in aeroacoustics, we have mastered the physics of sound. By reducing noise through our own anechoic chambers and expert engineers, we applied and further expanded our knowledge of sound in the development of Dyson OnTrac headphones.

“Our first over-ear headphones deliver best-in-class ANC, exceptional sound quality and all-day comfort through unique materials, design and fit.”

The new OnTrac headphones use 40mm neodymium drivers that are powered by advanced audio signal processing. The headphones can reproduce frequencies as low as 6 Hz and reach up to 21 kHz. The sound has a deep sub-bass that Dyson says you can feel. The speaker housing is angled 13 degrees towards the listener’s ear for a more direct sound response.

With up to 55 hours of listening time on a single charge, Dyson’s OnTrac headphones should last you several weeks of listening, even with ANC on. Two high-capacity lithium-ion cells suspended in the headband provide a more even distribution of weight. To turn ANC on and off, users just need to double-tap either earbud.

These new headphones also feature multi-rotating gimbal arms to reduce pressure on the listener’s ears. Soft micro-suede ear pads provide optimized clamping force for a consistent fit across a wide range of head sizes.

The Dyson OnTrac headphones will be available in four different colorways, each with a unique and durable finish designed by Jake Dyson and his team at CMF. Inspired by CNC fabrication, options include CNC aluminum, copper and nickel.

The OnTrac will also be available in a Ceramic Cinnabar version, which has a lacquered finish with a ceramic look. In addition to the four color options, users can customize their Dyson OnTrac by adding their own outer covers and ear cups in a wide variety of colors and finishes.

Price and Availability: The new Dyson OnTrac ANC wireless headphones will be available directly from Dyson.com and are priced at $499.99. Caps and cushions to customize the headphones will also be available on Dyson.com. The outer covers are made of high quality aluminum with a range of ceramic or anodised finishes and colours. Each set is priced at $49.99.
