ForbesToday’s NYT ‘Strands’ Tip, Spangram and Answers for Thursday July 18th

Hey gang! I hope you are ready for the weekend. This is my last day Springs coverage for several weeks. My colleague Paul will be your guiding light for seven days starting tomorrow.

Today’s NYT Springs hints, spangram and answers are coming.

How to play Strands

The New York Times Springs puzzle is a classic word search game. It’s now available on the NYT Games app along with the likes of it Wordle and Connection (which we also cover in the daily guides on Forbes Games).

There is a new game Springs play every day. The game presents you with a six by eight grid of letters. The goal is to find a group of words that have something in common and give you an idea of what the topic is. When you find a topic, the topic will remain highlighted in blue.

You will also need to find a special word called a spangram. This will tell you what the words have in common. A spangram joins at least two sides of the board, but must not start or end there. While the topic words will not be a proper noun, a spangram can be a proper noun. When you find a spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.

Each letter is used once in one of the theme words and the spangram. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and it is possible to switch directions in the middle of a word. If you’re playing on a touch screen, double-tap the last letter to submit your guess.

If you find three valid words containing at least four letters that are not part of the theme, you will unlock the Help button. Click this to highlight the letters that make up one of the theme words.

Be warned: You’ll have to be on your toes. Sometimes you will need to fill in the missing word(s) in a phrase. On other days, the game may revolve around synonyms or homophones. The difficulty will vary from day to day and the puzzle makers will try to surprise you at times.

Nothing clicked because I was looking for Oscar movie titles. I needed something else to go from, so I unlocked the hints that gave me the letters for HUNT, STONE, and SWANK. This indicated that I needed to search for the last names of the Oscar winners (Helen, Emma and Hilary in these cases). There were already a lot of them!

However, I found a spangram that helped. This blocked the letters for (Halle) BERRY and (Sally) FIELD. (Joaquin) PHOENIX was next, leaving (Jeff) BRIDGES for the win.

I used three hints and spangram was the fourth theme word I found. Not an ideal way to wrap up my current stint Springs coverage, but I graciously smile and applaud those who got a perfect game.

That’s all for today Springs clues and answers. Be sure to check out Paul’s blog for tips and solutions for Saturday’s game if you need them.
